Question: My relative is seriously unwell.he has had 5 weeks of severe diarrhoea, excrutiating abdominal pain, severe weight loss and antibiotics made him worse and dizzy. He had an endoscopy where they said he has an eroded intestinal lining now. He passes food 1 minute after eating,in exactly as it was before eating it. He works in a mine and thinks they had been drinking rusty water. Help please

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.
The cause of the diarrhoea should have been ascertained. The patient's bacterial flora seems to have been totally destroyed. In view of the seriousness of his condition I would suggest the following measures.
1. admission to hospital as early as possible.
2. carry out a battery of tests CBC, liver function tests, BUN, creatinine and electrolyte evaluation, stool culture, usg of the abdomen, viral markers.
3. IV fluid therapy to prevent dehydration and the possibility of renal failure.
4. high crabohydrate liquid diet till his bowel motility comes back to normal.
5. glutamine infusions to improve the healing and function of the gut.
6. supplements of commensal bacterial cultures may also help.
Definitive antibiotic treatment can only be commenced after studying the reports.
He should stay in hospital till all the symptoms are brought well under control.
I hope this answers your querry.
Regards

last tuesday i woke up in the morning with non stop explosive diarrhea...it was pure liquid. so the doc did blood samples/ rectal exam and found blood. i had excruciatin abdominal pain the next day so they did a ct scan and found nothing. the very next day i was extremely constipated for almost 5 days. then, i gave a stool sample yesterday mornin and they found a small indicator of some kinda infection. they prescribed me cipro and flagyl after the stool sample (because i had high white blood cell counts from my blood sample/ plus what they saw in my stool). this morning when i woke up i had the worst diarrhea i ve ever had. ever. it s nothing but pure liquid and i ve had it about 17 times already. it started out reddish/ orange and now its like neon yellow. i feel like ive released about 10 lbs of stool/ body fluid so far. it comes out in big gushes each time. plus i felt faint, nauseated, had abdominal pain and chills this mornin too. what s wrong with me?

I have had problems with my stomach and bowel movements (constipation) for the last couple years. Recently it has been worse than ever. I didnt have a regular bowl movement for a week and a half; a few mini ones here and there. It was like a switch flipped one day and I instantly had an upset stomach and have been having bouts of stool that are orangish with mucus and string like substances attached to it. Ive been that way for the last week. I feel like I should be going more that I still am...like I am not completely empty. My stomach has still been upset regularly. I dont know if I have a blockage, IBS, Side affects of my Nuva ring...? Ive been like this on and off but this is pry the worst yet. I personally think I have IBS. Im assuming my best option is to get some tests run but its hard to find the tim being that I drive truck for a living and dont want to do 20 tests that will lead no where.

Hello, Iâ??ve had a few months in the past year in which I was often constipated. This caused some pain & bleeding when having a BM. The bleeding was not constant & never acute. For the past appx four-five weeks, Iâ??ve had diarrhea â?? most times extremely watery. The diarrhea usually only occurs in the morning hours, sometimes at night. I usually go 3-5 times in the morning before it stops. I am still having rectal pain & occasional bleeding. It feels as if I have been torn there. My diet has changed lately also; I donâ??t have much of an appetite. I am now usually only eating one meal (dinner) per day; I just cannot bring myself to want to eat. I weigh appx. 185 lb and am 5â??7â??, 39, female, and in otherwise relatively good shape; although likely â??out of shapeâ??. Iâ??ve lost about 5 lb in the past few weeks, nothing major. Also, I have reflux & had been taking OTC Prilosec for quite some time (2+/- years), Zantac before that. I stopped taking my new prescription Dexilant after about 4 weeks of it, thinking THAT may be what was causing the diarrhea. Nothing has changed. I donâ??t feel necessarily weak or sick, but I have little energy. What could be causing this?

I am over a hundred pounds over weight. I had a change in bowel elimination...sorry i know this is un-savory stuff...i have more fattened stool as of lately sometimes ribbon in shaped...mostly i have diarrhea or watery elimination with small chunky waste...i want to lose my weight now as i suffer from BPH as well...My question is....can my being over weight which is mostly in the hip and buttock region be causing this fattened stool condition and not symptoms of colon cancer. I experience no blood in the stool...i am determined to lose this weight now and i have had no weight lose that i am aware of...thank you for your time...
