Question: Recovered from colon cancer 3 1/2 years ago. Was diagnosed stage 2a but DE-staged to 1a after pathology report. I have removed sugar and went to a gluten free diet recently. I take about 6 to 8 amodium a day to control my bowel movements. I am not able to successfully control these movements and often do not make it to bathroom in time. Is there another approach i should consider. Thanks

Brief Answer:
A bit more details needed.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Motility dysfunction is quite common after colon and more in rectal cancer.

What procedure you underwent (colectomy or anterior resection)?
Have you undergone any chemo or radiation?

What are your symptoms, increased frequency?
Does the consistency of the stool is normal or altered?

Awaiting your reply...
Thanks

I had an anterior resection, took about 11 inches of my colon out.

My symptoms are lack of control after first bowel movement and sometime no control at all. the constancy of my stole is both solid at first then loose again with no warning have just a few seconds to get to the bathroom and often don't make it. I recently went to a gluten free diet and have eliminated sugar and dairy from my diet 1 year ago.

Brief Answer:
Pelvic exercises can be helpful.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Your sphincters which control the bowel movements can dysfunction after anterior resection may be due to injury to sphincter or nerve injury.
Pelvic exercises can strengthen your pelvic floor and helps you to regain the control over time.
In severe cases anti motility drugs can be tried after consulting your physician.
Thanks
