Question: my 7 year old son has a pus filled pimple with a red circle around it and the entire area is swollen. He is having trouble walking because it is painful. I have upload another photo of the other hard white pimples he has on his legs and bum but these don't hurt and have no red circle around them

Hi,

Thanks for your query.

The lesions your child has are boils and happen due to inflammation in the hair follicle and is also called folliculitis.

This occurs due to bacterial infection of the hair follicle. The bacteria could be from the external environment either through physical contact or via fomites. The other possibility is bacteria in the blood (bacteremia) confirmed by blood culture test.

I suggest you take your son to his treating doctor who after examining him can place him on suitable antibiotics which is the definitive treatment.

Meanwhile if there is any boil pointing out pus, the boil has to be broken under sterile precautions and express the pus and debris from it then apply an antibiotic cream like ones containing MUPRIOCIN and dress the wound. This will reduce the pain due to the lesion soon.

Hope I answered your query.

Please let me know if there are any other concerns.

Regards,
