Question: Hi Dr. Grief. My 67 yo white wife is currently suffering from a bronchitis and sinus infection which is being treated with Augmentin. She also has Afib developed in the last 3 months and is taking the following meds :Diltiazem 25 mg: Torsemide 20mg : Eliquis 5mg: Crestor 20mg. Is there an OTC cough med she can take because she has a severe cough. Her Primary physician gave her an antibiotic shot yesterday as well but did not prescribe a cough med. She has chronic bronchitis and may have copd although that has never been diagnosed. She also has chronic asthma and uses Alvesco. She is also morbidly obese. She is coughing to the extent that she becomes very short winded, Thanks for you advice.

Brief Answer:
Dextromethorpan based cough syrup

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Greetings of the day

If her cough Is not associated with expectoration she can take Codeine phosphate or Dextromethorpan based cough suppressant. They are usually over the counter. If it's not available the Bromhexine and Guaphenesin based cough suppressant can be used.
Apart from that I would suggest you some home based remedies that will really be helpful
1. Steam inhalation : 15 to 20 minutes each session twice a day.
2. Warm saline gargling : Add two spoon of common table salt to glass of lukewarm water .Gargle it thrice a day
3. Decoction ; to a cup of milk + 10 Tulsi leaves (Holy basel if available)+ 1 spoon of turmeric + 2 gm of fresh ginger + 2 black pepper. Bring it to boil. Filter it and serve hot. To be consumed thrice a day. Sugar can be added as per taste.

Do get back to me if you need any further assistance, will be glad to assist you.

Take care
