Pregnant. Have Dry Cough, Fever. On Cepodem, Crocin. Started Getting Burning Sensation In Nose. Prognosis?

Question: My wife is 8 Months pregnant and we last visited her obst. on Monday late afternoon in a big hospital. Now since tuesday evening, she's been having dry cough to an extent that it has been paining around her navel. We gave her piriton CS to start with and tried some gargling but it did'nt help. Started with cepodem 200 yesterday and till now, she's had 3 doses but that too has had little effect. She has dry cough and fever of about 100 . Crocin brings it down but it comes back again. Continous cough is causing her now to have body aches (Having crocin brings her bodyaches down) and she has burning sensation in her nose and eyes (ever since she tried 2 doses of piriton cs in warn water). I've now been advised to get her h1n1 flu test done and we are sort of anxious , about what is or could be wrong ?

Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. Medicines that are safe to use in children are usually safe to use in pregnancy.

2. As she is pregnant medication should be kept minimal, if possible.

3. H1N1 usually presents with high grade fever not responding to medication. Hence this is unlikely to be H1N1. Since she is in a high risk group and since there are H1N1 cases being reported, there is no harm in getting an H1N1 test done.

4. If this is a reactive airway, there is no treatment except to soothe the throat. Use Tantum oral rinse for gargling. Use household remedies such as few drops of crushed ginger in a table spoon of honey. Give her Turmeric in warm milk at night.

5. Use Crocin (paracetamol / acetaminophen)to control the fever. Complete the course of Cepodem. Add an anti-histamine. Do not mix the cough syrup in warm water. This probably precipitates the dextrimethorphan which is insoluble in water and leads to the burning sensation in her nose and eyes.

I hope that I have answered your queries. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

Thank you for your prompt reply Doctor. We gave her crocin at about 7.00 PM Yesterday evening when she had about 100 temperature. Ever since, the fever has come down and, just to ensure the effect stays, she had another crocin at about 1.30 am and there has been no fever till now when i send this response. The milk and turmeric sort of worked and she has less cough right now (A lot less than before). The flipside is that i've got myself some cough now which has some mucus.

So you think at this point, we still need h1n1 test done or we can classify it as just some isolated allergy ? Also, We have our 3 year old son who is staying with his grandparents right now because of this issue so shall be maintain this quarantine or, any precautions we can take and bring him back ?

Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. Since the fever has come down and her symptoms have reduced, it does not seem to be H1N1.

2. There is no harm in doing the test. It is only a throat swab. Unless you are asked to go to a center exclusively for swine flu patients. Another point to be noted is that swine flu medication should be started within 48 hours for it to be of any help.

3. Since you have also picked it up, it is probably a viral fever. Start medication early. Let your son stay with your parents till you both are better.

I hope that I have answered your queries. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

Thank you Doctor for your reply. Just 1 final question before i XXXXXXX this discussion closed. Due to this continous coughing, my wife has pain around her navel and back each time she coughs . Could this coughing in any way harm the baby in her womb ? We did ask her obst. but she told us to ignore it. You think this should be ignored or followed up upon ? Thank you and was really nice to use this platform to communicate with you !

Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. The coughing and pain will not affect or harm the baby in any way.

2. She has to endure the discomfort as it is better to keep medications to a minimum in pregnancy.

Wishing you all good health and a safe delivery to your wife.

I recharged this question again as i've fallen ill now. as you can already see the case history above with my wife, Since yesterday afternoon, i have been feeling sort of weak myself and had a wikoryl 500 + Cepodem 200 & Multivitamin A2Z . By evening when i checked my fever it was around 101 . I repeated the wikoryl but to no avail. around midnight i checked my fever and it was around 102 and i took crocin fast relief . Iam not sure it brought my fever down but i slept for 4 hours and at about 4.am today, i again has 102.5 fever. I took a crocin fast relief again and it has been happening ever since that i take crocin every 5 hours and cepodemx2 per day but seems my fever is sort of stuck at 101/102 . I took my last dose around 8.45 when my fever was 102.7 and since then, there has been very slight change of like 102.3 . Whats wrong with me ? Wondering and what medication do i continue. Also, during past 24 hours, i just had a besan ki roti last night and since today morning , have had 2 biscuits before having each dose.

1. Take a tablet of Combiflam (Paracetamol and Ibuprofen) instead and repeat every 6 hours til the fever subsides. Tepid sponging is also recommened above 103 F. Ibuprofen should be avoided in asthma and gastric problems. Do not take on an empty stomach.

2. If there is very high fever (above 104 F) take a single tablet only of Nimesulide 100 mg.

3. Do you have any sore throat or cough? It is better to isolate yourself from your wife who is recovering. I would observe the progress before concluding if this is the same viral.

4. Continue the rest of the medication and use medicated gargle such as Betadine. Do not hesitate to get your blood tests and H1N1 swab done if the fever is high tomorrow morning.

I hope that I have answered your queries. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Thank you doctor your reply.
I had taken already crocin when i had sent the message above and somehow it was'nt working. I decided to eat 2 chapatis and crocin sort of started working and my temperature starting coming down. however, around 2.30 am, i took my temperature and found it was 103.2 and immediately took Combiflam . It brought down my temprature @ .5F/Hr in about 2 hours and i had a sound sleep thereafter till 7.45 am . My fever right now is 99 and i've taken another dose of combiflam + Cepodem + Multivitamin.

Soar throat is slight better (Have had piriton CS doses) however, a change that happened since last night is that i have a slight runny nose.

So how long do i continue this combiflam ? Please let me know.

Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. You may take Combiflam every 6 hours till the high fever is in control. You may also take it when required if the fever is low (below 101 F). Regular dosage is up to 3 tablets per day (8 hourly) for an adult.

2. Take an anti-allergic decongestant such as Tab. Rupanex-M and Tab. Solvin once a day after consultation with your doctor.

3. Rest and hydration is important.

I hope that I have answered your queries. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Goodevening Doctor,

I had 3 combiflam doses in past 24 hours, 2.30 am , 9.30 am , 4.30 pm (7 hours break) and right now, the temperature is on upside again (Currently 100.5) . Please advise if its okay to take combiflam now ? If not then what else could i take (have crocin fast relief with me). The typical symptom i have each time the fever is coming is that i have body ache that comes before hand and weakness in body .

Thank you.
