Hi, My one year old son had been passing mucus in stool. He does not have fever and is taking food as usual. His activites are also normal though energy levels are slightly low.Yesterday we visited our paediatrician who advised that there is nothing to worry and prescribed a zinc acetate syrup ( 2.5 ML twice a day). We have administered the syrup yesterday evening and today morning. Today afternoon he has again passed stool with Mucus which was XXXXXXX in colour. We are worried and bit freaked out, trying to reach our paed but he seems unreachable. Please advise if its normal???

Thank you for the query.

Mucus is something that is constantly produced by intestinal cells. So it is present in the stool all the time. However usually it is not visible. When the stool passage is slower than usually (like constipations) the mucus accumulates in the intestines and can be visible in the stool. It can also appear with intestines bacterial infection, food allergy, inflammatory bowels diseases, pancreas inflammation, IBS. But all this diseases do give plenty of other symptoms.
Mucus without any other symptoms like abdominal pain, diarrhea, fever, blood in stool, abdominal cramps is not a sign of a disease. So it sound like there is nothing to worry about indeed.
Stool color is due to bile appearance in it. This bile gets darker by intestinal bacterias (what takes time) and if the stool passage is increased, the bile cant get brown, and appears as XXXXXXX stool.
I suggest you to start with probiotics (intestinal bacterias) supplementation and avoid fatty foods for some time. It should help. If not, you can make some stool tests to make sure everything is fine.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.

Generally all probiotics are safe for kids. You can try Darolac twice a day. Just note that similar bacterias are in yogurts or some kind of cheese.
In your diet you should avoid fatty foods, spicy foods, cabbage, onion, garlic, coffee, cauliflower. Generally the products should be fresh (without artificial ingredients).

Hope this will help.
