Question: Suffered a cramping of the right calf last Saturday in a martial arts drill. The calf is mildly swollen and there is some purple discoloration at the lateral base of the right foot. The calf remains mildly swollen one week later. I am elevating it when I can and taking Eleve to help with the pain. The area up just behind the toes also remains swollen. How long will the swelling continue? I do have the ankle wrapped with an elastic ace bandage.

Thanks for writing to us
Your symptoms should take about a week-10 days to resolve. It seems that you have suffered from soft tissue injury.Give as much rest as you can to your injured leg for speedy recovery.

Aspirin that you are taking will help in decreasing the pain. You should also take muscle relaxant like chlorzaxone one tablet twice a day along with Tablet Prevacid 20 one tablet once a day one hour before meals. You can also take serratiopeptidase preparation two to three times a day to reduce the swelling. You will need a prescription from your physician for this.
Application of pain relieving gel after hot fomentation will be beneficial. Continue using the elastic bandage for support and elevation of limb. It will take few days for complete recovery.

If the problem persists, get yourself examined by an Orthopedic surgeon.

I hope this is helpful to you. If you have any further queries, I will be happy to help.

Thanks much, doctor. Have a good weekend! How long will the discoloration on the lower foot persist?

Discolouration in lower foot will perhaps persists for few days to weeks. Do not worry, it will resolve by itself.

I have seen one neurologist here in Boston and have been recently diagnosed with cervical dystonia after years of headaches, oral medications for headaches and muscle tension, physical therapy, accupuncture with no improvement. I also have a hx of c5-6 herniated disc in my neck, and recent soft tissue injury in 2011. I m floored with the dx of dystonia and have been getting Botox injections with oral amitripyline for the past 6 months with no real improvement. Should I get another opinion to be evaluated any differently for other causes of my neck, r shoulder pain and headaches?

Hello, My daughter is 14 years of age. She has been quite active and enjoyed doing sport and dancing as well as acrobatics. On 13 November she fell on her back during a sports period and I took her for X rays that did not show any abnormalities and they though it may just be a soft tissue injury or hurt muscles. Since 6 months ago she has experienced a lot of back muscle pain in her lower as well as her middle portion of her back. I have taken her for physiotherapy and also administered anti inflammatory medication (iboprofen) but with no real relief. I was refered to an Orthopaedic surgeon who also did an assessment and said nothing seems to be wrong but if I wanted to make sure I could take her for an MRI. At that stage and after a lot of money I did not have the $600 for the MRI and decided to try another round of some physio, but to no avail. My daughter has attempted to do sport but even running or swimming proves to be a severe challenge. She also mentions that the pain feels like it may be in her bones / vertebrae as well. Could this be the symptoms of another condition that I may not be aware of? Kind REgards, Melissa

I got the pertussis vaccine a couple days ago and last night noticed a tender, movable, hard, ball just above my collarbone. I remember this happening about 10 yrs ago when I got a flu shot in the same arm, in which I had a soft tissue injury in that shoulder just before the injection. This time the ball is much more sore. Could it be a single lymph node, building immunity? Is this common, and should I see a doctor?
