Can Amoxicillin Cause Confusion?

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Aug 2023
Question: My mother is 87 and in the latter stages of Parkinson's. When she gets even a minor infection, she has higher instances of hallucinations. She is taking 20 mg of Geodon and is on a 2 mg Neupro patch (for her Parkinson's). She has been well adjusted on these medications for the last few months. The Geodon at night usually shuts down active dreaming, where she talks or acts out. She currently sees a nurse monthly and was just examined yesterday. Mom has had a sinus infection for two weeks. It has made her sleep more than usual. The nurse suggested Clariton to alleviate post nasal drip isssues. She also suggested Amoxicillin down the road if it persisited. As this service is unavailable on weekends and her doctor is also unavailable, I thought I might try this route. She is currently hallucinating in a mild way (talking to people who are not there) she does not usually do this. She does do this when she has things like a UTI (which I've tested her for- negative). I suspect her sinus infection is getting the best of her. I will call the doctor on call, but my real question is, will the Amoxicillin cause further confusion? She has had such reactions to bactrim. Brief Answer:
Amoxicillin can cause mild confusion

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

There are several medications that can cause confusion, but amoxicillin is not in the first line to this side effect.
Anyway, there are some cases among people who visit my clinic that complain mild confusion after taking amoxicillin.
So, in this case, I would suggest not to use amoxicillin.

Some other options for treating the sinus infection are:
-drink liquids
-use decongestant nasal sprays or saline nasal sprays
-use oral antihistamines like cetirizine 10 mg daily
