Question: My husband who usually gets severely constipated has been evacuating all week, all day with a few moments of reprieve. He has developed severe stomach cramps. What would be good relief? I’m sure I have given him too much magnesium and vitamin D. He had a left side ischemic stroke 3.5 years ago and usually the problem is constipation.

Brief Answer:
Maybe due to gastroenteritis

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

What I can get from your history is that your husband is suffering from stomach cramps along with frequent visits to the washroom for passing stools, has been given too much Vitamin D and Magnesium, is usually constipated, had the stroke, being given XXXXXXX Seltzer.

First of all, he has suffered from an ischemic stroke in past mean must be receiving some blood thinner and the effects will be negated as XXXXXXX Seltzer contains Aspirin too hence if he is receiving aspirin as blood thinner then you have to stop XXXXXXX Seltzer.

You can try giving black tea with lemon.

He needs an antispasmodic like Dicyclomine or whichever is available at the local Pharmacy.

Do not give Imodium as it can cause further constipation.

I would advise him the following further:
Get the stool and blood tested (routine and microscopy).
If there is an intestinal infection then he needs a course of an antibiotic active against intestinal infection, probiotics.

Clinical evaluation by a Doctor to know the clinical status of the gastrointestinal tract as well as of other systems of cardiac and neurological status, relevant investigations and proper management considering his age and past medical problems.

I hope this answer helps you.
