Question: My husband has a pain on one side of his back. He is waiting to have hernia surgery. Could these two things be connected? He is also constipated and the doctor gave him medicine to soften his stools.

Brief Answer:
Causes as mentioned below

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Pain on one side of back can be due to the following reasons:
- Constipation can cause pain in back only if the fecoliths are impacted.
- Local causes like muscle spasm, herniated disc causing local and radiating pains.
- Hernia can cause pain only if the bowel is out of abdominal cavity in the sac of hernia and causing pull on the origin of intestinal attachment called mesentery. This happens only in large hernia.
- Kidney stone impacted in ureter.

Needs proper clinical examination and relevant investigations to know the cause.
Please do a proper evaluation by his doctor to get an appropriate cause and treat him accordingly.

I hope this answer helps you to find the cause. Please feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap of communication.
