Question: I've been experiencing stomach pain and right sided chest discomfort when exercising. this has been going on for 18 months. it all started ever since I had kyphosis surgery in August of 2018. when I walk I feel like I have to burp, I get mildly short of breath, and discomfort in right side of chest. I do burp and fart alot. I also get a painful pulse in my neck when I put my head to my chin and wash my hair in a hot shower. the pain will last for about two minutes. I'm 25 years old 6ft 233 pounds. i have an overall seditary lifestyle, but am trying to move more. I have had elvated blood pressure for the last three years; average being 135/87. the symptoms improve when sitting or laying down, but are still present. what could this be?

Brief Answer:
Please give additional information

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history.
Please give additional information for me to assist you better:
Pain in abdomen: (lot of burps and farts noted - pain also noted)
Where exactly is the pain in abdomen?
Type of pain: twisting/ dull/ colicky?
Any relation to food/fluids?
Increasing factors?
Relieving factors?
Stools: hard/ not well formed/ constipation/ foul smell/ mucus and/or blood?

Burping:
Any burning in chest like heartburn in the center?
Sourness?

Is the chest discomfort in the chest wall - the ribs and muscles?
Any medicines for raised blood pressure?
Any investigations like Endoscopy, Ultrasonography, tests of blood and stool? If yes post the reports.

Was Kyphosis surgery successful? Any issues in back or so?
Neck: Where exactly the painful pulse on bending? Any pain that continues?

Awaiting for your detailed feedback as it helps a lot.

Feels like a heavy pain on left side and sometimes center of abdominal area. Happens in motion or at rest. Tends to be worse when moving and standing. Better with rest. I've had a chest xray and ekg all come back normal.

Kyphosis surgery was successful with correcting spinal curvatures. However, I had a post operative ileus and have had stomach trouble, gerd, constipation, and stomach discomfort, along with low exercise tolerance ever since the surgery. The more I walk the worse my acid reflux is. I can indegestion like discomfort behind and below my sterum and upper right chest. I had an endoscopy that found mild esophagus inflammation. Negative blood work for x pylori.

Kyphosis surgery was t6-l2 fusion.

Painful pulse is in my neck when I take a hot shower and put my chin to my chest to wash my hair.

No medicine for elevated BP just attempted lifestyle changes.

Chest discomfort feels like it's behind the chest. That is a dull feeling in upper right chest, only happens with movement, rarely at rest.

I wouldn't say it feels like burning, it feels like a dull ache and will get better with burping but quickly comes back. Feels like indgestion. I've had food come back up, like I've tasted what I ate hours ago and feels like i vomited a little. This in below the sterum, in the sternum and in the spot between the sterum and neck

Detailed Answer:
Noted your detailed feedback. Thanks.
My thoughts:
Vertebral Surgery done.
Followed by ileus meaning there was some changes in the nerve supply to the intestines causing primary and secondary changes that you have mentioned above in details.
Hence I would advise you the following in such a situation which you can discuss with your Doctors and request for proper further evaluation and investigations:
CT scan of abdomen with Enteroclysis. Enteroclysis can tell about the duration of passage of XXXXXXX and can show many things as follows:
Speed of motility.
Any obstruction, kinking, dilatation of intestines. This give best information.
Upper GI endoscopy (done already).
Colonoscopy.
Tests of stool and blood.
All these gives correlation to clinical evaluation and thus allow to get an appropriate diagnosis so that the management can be specific and effective.
I hope, your are on a PPI and Motility regulator like Domperidone/Metoclopramide or so. Needs a valid prescription.

Secondly, CT scan of chest and particularly for the study of the spine, lungs and chest wall helps to rule out any problem and if anything is found to be treated accordingly.
Avoid the foods and beverages that increase your symptoms.
Avoid stress and anxiety.
Sedentary life increases problems. Hence walk at least after taking dinner. Take dinner early.
Sleep in reclining position. Helps to avoid GERD and regurge.
Good to know that X-ray of chest and EKG were normal.

I hope this answers your queries, helps for further evaluation to get an appropriate diagnosis and thus allow better management.

Feel free to ask for further relevant queries.

Do my symptoms sound like they can be linked to atherscslrosis? Or does this seem like a GERD thing?

Detailed Answer:
I hope you have gone through my detailed answer above.
I do not think the symptoms are related to atherosclerosis at such an early age of 25 years.
GERD is surely there.
