default
Posted on Tue, 5 Jan 2016
Question: I took 1/4 of a 250 mg Disulfiram tablet about 20 hours ago for the first time ever. Is it safe to have 2-3 glasses of wine now, or do I need to wait?

Brief Answer:
You will need to wait for at least 1 week.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to HCM.

Disulfiram is one of the type of aversion therapy and very useful for chronic alcoholic.

Usually in the body alcoho convert into acetic acid by enzyme alcoho dehydrogenase and further it convert into acetaldehyde by acetaldehyde dehydrogenase

Disulfiram inhibit this enzyme acetaldehyde dehydrogenase and due to that accumulation of acetic acid occur in our body and which (Acetic acid) is very toxic substance to cause reactions (that include nausea, vomiting, flushing, tachycardia, palpitations, giddiness, some times cause hypo-tension, shock , coma , death etc) in the body.

Disulfiram will stay in body up to 1 week (or up to 2 weeks if you have taken full dose) so it is unsafe to drink alcohol up to 1 week after its last dose (even if it is 1/4th).

So,ideally you have to wait for at least 1 week for another drink.

Hope this will help you.
