default
Posted on Sat, 20 Dec 2014
Question: I heard B12 is good for tinnitus or B complex. Have u heard of tinnitus retraining therapy?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Abubakar Siddiqh (1 hour later)
Brief Answer:
B complex vitamins-increase micro circulation, TTT- Noise generators

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.

As per your clinical details, your tinnitus is due to sensorineural hearing loss. It usually occurs with senility.

As such, vitamin supplements -B1, B6, B12, B3, and Zinc do help in aborting the symptom of tinnitus, but not the root cause of tinnitus (cell loss). They will help in improvement of micro circulation of cochlear nerve- responsible for hearing, (becomes week in senile persons).

Tinnitus retraining therapy- Is a last resort (bothersome tinnitus), where counseling and habituation therapy started with external noise generators (background noise) to match internal tinnitus. it should be given for years for its beneficial effects.

Hope this answers your question, if you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.

Brief Answer:
once daily, helps in tinnitus.

Detailed Answer:

Hello again,

Thanks for considering my answer and for your follow up.

As such, vitamin B complex reffered as eight B vitamins — B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9, B12. It should be taken with zinc because most of the elderly people will have zinc deficincy (zinc deficincy causes hearing loss).

They are safe drugs, can be taken daily, no intiraction with your routine medications. Definatly, it will help in releiving tinnitus.

Hope, I have answered your query. take care.

Brief Answer:
hearing aids-best for tinnitus

Detailed Answer:

Hello again,

Answers for your queries-

For treating age-related deafness, elemental zinc 80 mg is the dosage.

Cochlear implants- It is a prosthesis, where implant electrode is inserted into cochlea by surgical procedure. Most often used in congenital deaf (born deaf and dumb) who has profound deafness (more than 90 decibels).

As such, it is contraindicated in patients with systemic diseases (diabetes, hypertension, cardiac problem-they are common in elderly persons).

In my opinion, you can try hearing aid.

Hope, I have answered your query.

Take care.

The hearing aid, what you are using itself gradually reduce your symptoms. As an alternative therapy or placebo effect, you can try with cold laser therapy, acupuncture, meditation, change of lifestyle (do not concentrate too much on tinnitus).

TTT (Tinnitus retraining therapy)- Form of habituation, it comprises
1. counseling 2. sound therapy (works on neural signals).

counseling - group counseling
sound therapy-Portable music player as a sound generator can be used as a cost effective tinnitus retraining therapy.

Hello again,

Thanks for considering my answer and for your follow up.

Answers for your queries-

1. Biofeedback : 10 to 12 one-hour sessions for 6-12 months, where electrodes will record signals (heart rate, body temperature, brain waves and blood pressure) which are recoded in computer. This signals are matched when the person is in different emotions and thoughts. It is a a laborious process, acts as psychotherapy or hypnotherapy. (treatment of choice in tinnitus with depression).

2. acupuncture : Needle insertion in pressure points causing tinnitus.

3.cognitive behavioral therapy : works by reducing stress, distraction from tinnitus.

All these are choices of treatment in failure of hearing aid as a tinnitus marker.

Hope, I have answered your query.

Take care.
