Posted on Tue, 27 May 2014
Question: Hi,

I am currently pregnant, about 5 weeks along.
and I have had Hyperthyroid before, and was on and off of Thyrozol medications (10mg/day).

My last blood check shows: (in March)
TSHs: 0.080
T3: 1.12
T4: 9.80

so should I continue taking the Thyrozol while I am pregnant?

thanks.

Brief Answer:
Hello

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Good day. What kind of hyperthyroidism did you have before? Grave's disease or toxic goiter ?
Thyrozol is carbimazole. It is not advisable to take that in first three months of pregnancy,. Better to change over to propyl thio uracil ( PTU). After 3 months of pregnancy, we can change back to Thyrozol.

Hi,

thanks for the reply.

my previous doctor didnt mention abt which hyperthyroidism it was. But the medication he gave me was just thyrozol, and some other ones (i forgot the name) that slows down the heart beat.

is it ok not to take any medicine now though? Is it ok to not take any of the medicine until the baby is born?

thanks

Brief Answer:
Hi

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
The other medicine you took probably was Inderal ( propranolol) to slow down the heart rate. You don't require that anymore and it is not advisable in pregnancy.
If you stop all medicines completely, it may cause extreme hyperthyroidism and can cause problems in pregnancy. Please do not do that.

As I mentioned earlier, you need PTU now in first three months of pregnancy and later can change back to Thyrozol. ( you also may need to do liver function tests while on this medicines)

Hi Dr. ,

Just wanted to ask, since I had a miscarriage last year, due to low estrogen levels, does the hyperthyroid have anything to do with it?
and if not, what may have caused it?

thanks

Brief Answer:
Hi

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

yes, hyperthyroidism can cause miscarriage if not properly controlled. Hyperthyroidism can disturb other hormone secretion too. That is exactly the reason why i mentioned earlier that you shouldnt stop the treatment. Just need to change to PTU during first three months of pregnancy. Your gynecologist will monitor baby's heart beat and growth etc to see if your hyperthyroidism is affecting the baby or not.
