Posted on Thu, 23 Jun 2016
Question: Hi...I have thyroid for past 5-6 years and the value was 16 when it was detected...now I take 100/mg eltroxin every morning empty stomach half an hour before breakfast...tsh values as checked very year in routine checking is close to 1-2..I think the cholesterol level has increased due to thyroid and have been around 200 going till 270 and now at 230...I am active and do aerobics 5 times a week and also running 10k or 21k every one month with some sporadic running during week as well...questions

Comments on thyroid and any permanent cure..should I reduce the dosage...or is this fine..any other medicine like calcium etc to be included with the same..also comments on link of thyroid and cholesterol and how to control the same..hdl is at very good level..it was 60 in last test...

Brief Answer:
Thyroid medications can be reduced.

Detailed Answer:
HI XXXXXXX

Greetings from Dr.Divakara.P
Thanks for posting your query.

There is no permanent cure for Thyroid problem ( Hypothyroidism ) but in some people it gradually heals by itself over a period of years. Then then you need to keep taking medications.

Your TSH value og 1-2 is very good and hence your dose can be reduced to 600mcg per week ( take 100mg tablet six days a week ) . Follow this dose and repeat TSH after 3 months.

Because of hypothyroidism , the metabolism in body is slow and hence Cholesterol increases ( inspite of your good exercise schedule ) . You have mentioned that your cholesterol is 230 but I need to know whether this is Total Cholesterol or is it LDL cholesterol because the decision to whether start cholesterol lowering medicine depends on this factor.

Apart from cholesterol lowering medicine , you need to increase the intensity of exercise and eat low cholesterol diet.

Diet : Avoid sweets , Carbonated drinks, red meat, egg yolk, Potato, avoid cheese , butter , junk food .

Eat more fruits, more vegetables.

Coming to calcium supplement , usually I recommend for females or patients who are more than 50 years of age . So for you as of now nop need for calcium .

Any clarifications feel free to ask.

Regards

Brief Answer:
Potato restricted to ensure weight loss.

Detailed Answer:
Its better you skip the medicine on Sundays so that it will be easy to remember.

Potato is not restricted for thyroid disease but it has been advised to avoid so that you lose some weight which helps in thyroid disease.

Regards.
