default
Posted on Tue, 2 Dec 2014
Question: I am currently taking Prednisone (50 mg) and Avelox (400 mg) for COPD flare-ups. I take 1 pill of each
for 5 straight days. It seems to work. My question is do you agree with me that this is ok to do. If not, can you suggest what I should be taking for COPD flare-ups.

Brief Answer:
Ok, only for severe exacerbation

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. This regimen if fine for severe exacerbations of the COPD. Worsening of symptoms such as breathlessness, wheezing, changes in the sputum, cough are situations in which this is fine.

2. However there is a risk of antibiotic resistance and long term effects of frequent oral steroids.

3. You may use an inhaler with a bronchodilator and a steroid for a mild exacerbation.

4. Chest physiotherapy, mucolytics, steam, nebulization are good forms of supportive medication. An air ioniser / purifier can help reduce exposure to air pollutants.

If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
