Is Surgery For Fracture On Shoulder Advisable When Sufferin From Scoliosis?

default
Posted on Wed, 21 May 2014
Question: I asked a question concerning a fall my sister age 77 had about 3 weeks ago.
The answer I received was greatly appreciated, and I have another one.

Your doctor advised to get an x-ray immediately & the x-ray showed she had fractured or broke her left shoulder (upper) left arm. Went to othopedic doctor. His advice was to sling it & it would heal by itself after about 6 weeks. Went back for follow up exam & x-ray showed it had moved & now says she can either have surgery (which he recommends) or keep a sling & will heal this way with longterm loss of mobility & pain in movements for her future.

I think I understood him to indicate with surgery, recovery, & rehab 2 x a week she will have more mobility & less future pain. The surgery will be to inplant a rod & ball. She is 77 & in a lot of pain from scoliosis, not real steady on her feet, therefore because of her present health condition do you have an opinion if should opt for surgery or just deal wilh less mobility & more pain? She has been on pain pills for quite a long time from her back condition.

If I have made myself clear enough, I would appreaciate an opinion.

I realized I forgot to ask specifically an opinion on to go with surgery or not to go with surgery.

Brief Answer:
Surgery will help her better.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Considering the fracture it is best for her to undergo a surgery and have a better quality of life as compared to the conservative treatment. But at her age she needs a thorough evaluation of her cardiac condition to see if she can take the stress of the surgery. You need to consult her anesthetist and get her evaluated according to his recommendations. If the anesthetist feels that she can handle the surgery then it is best to go for a rod and ball implantation as her orthopedic surgeon has suggested.
I hope this answers your query.
