Brief Answer:
Its NOT essential but optional.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.

Stem cells can heal the body, promote recovery, and offer an enormous amount of therapeutic potential, many of which are right now in experimental stage.

Right now they are being used for treating rare disease like fanconi anemia and thalassemia.

Cord blood also has unique advantages over traditional bone marrow transplantation, particularly in children, and can be life-saving in rare cases where a suitable bone-marrow donor cannot be found.

Cord blood stem cells can also be used for siblings and other members of your family who have a matching tissue type.

If you want to protect your childs future from any rare but untreatable disease then go for it. It is worth it.

But at the same time if it is expensive for you then you do not NECESSARILY need it.

Most children do not ever utilize the stem cells stored of theirs because rare diseases are (obviously) RARE.

So my advise is that if you cannot afford it and do not have family history of genetic or blood disorders then you do not NEED it. Its optional.
