Is Severe Hair Loss A Side Effect Of Discontinuing Femilon?

Posted on Mon, 10 Aug 2015
Question: Doctor
My daughter, 20 yrs old was prescribed Femilon for 6 months after FREE TESTOSTERONE TEST and DHEAS test. After completion of the course she stopped the medication without further consultation as she is studying and staying in hostel. After a gap of 6 months she did the tests again in different place as she could not visit the same doctor. The present doctor said the report is ok. But when same report is informed to the old doctor, she prescribed XXXXXXX for another 6 months. Since the beginning of treatment she never had any symptoms other than painful periods, which is reduced after medication. Now too she does not have any symptoms other than loss of hair. So I want to know that if no symptoms, does it require to continue the medicine? Is it harmful or any side effects to stop medicine after completion of 6 months course? Please suggest the next course of action as we are not able to visit the Doc immediately as staying far away from the doc as well as the family? Thank you in advance.

Hello and welcome to Health Care Magic Forum. I went through your query and understand your concern. I would like to advise your daughter to continue XXXXXXX as advised by your doctor.
Can you upload both the reports if possible. the presently uploaded image only shows the last page if report and doesnt show the value of the testosterone or DHEAS.
I would also like to ask about the weight of your daughter.
it will be a pleasure to relieve your concern

Good Morning Doctor,
Her weight is 59 kg. with average height approx 5.5".

My concern is due to careless and non reply of clarification in time by my old doctor. She addressed my daughter wrongly as Mrs. and asked to stop Femilon when we already informed her that medicine was taken for 6 months as prescribed and after that she is not taking any medication for last 6 months.

there is no other symptom at present except falling of hair, which she feels a bit excess than normal.

when she visited home on vacation last month, she did the tests again, the reports are uploaded again for your evaluation. it looks like that the reports are normal as told by local doctor. the local doctor did not suggested any medicine.

when we mail the same report, her old doctor wrote "stop Femilon and start Yasmin" like this - "0-0-1 from day 5 - day 25th for 6 months.

please enlighten and advice us, what we should do? thank you.

Brief Answer:
Stop hormones

Detailed Answer:
Hello Sir, I have seen all the reports and knowing her general physical parameters which are perfectly normal along with normal reports and subtle history, in my final opinion she doesn't need any such medication any more.
Stopping the pills won't have any side effects so don't worry about that.
Ask her to take a note of following points -
- wash her hair regularly with a mild shampoo
- avoid hair dryer or straightening as much as possible
- drink a lot of water daily
- include almonds and milk in her daily diet
- increase the proteins in her diet by taking pulses and cottage cheese
- take tablet hairbless daily which has good components for hair growth and prevention of hair fall.
Her reports are almost normal and thus nothing active needs to be done.
Also for pain in periods she can take tablet mefenemic acid and drotin during the time of pain.
Pain in periods is very common in young girls and thus can be easily managed by these simple drugs and will be fine after childbirth.
All the best.
