Is salvage radiation therapy recommended after radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer?

Posted on Wed, 10 Jun 2015 in Cancer
Question: Radical prostate surgery Aug 2003 (PSA = 7) pathologist report: XXXXXXX 3+4, one positive margin, otherwise tumor confined to prostate. Initial PSA 1 month after surgery = 0.1 ng/mL; XXXXXXX slowly over 10 years to 0.3 (or 0.4). Over last 1 1/2 years has risen to 0.6 [the following tests were at 6 month intervals] starting (9/2013)... 0.3 ---> 0.4 -----> 0.5 ----> 0.6 (4/2015). Doubling time (DT) over first 10 years following surgery ~ 5 year; (DT) over last 1.5 year = 18 months. Do you recommend salvage radiation therapy at this point ?

Brief Answer:

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your query.

The standard recommendation for salvage radiation after radical prostatectomy is a PSA of 0.2 ng/ml. In your case it has touched this level sometime back and is showing increasing trend. Hence I definitely recommend salvage RT.

Hope this answers your query. I will be available for follow up.
