Question: Hi. I had a pineapple orange and blueberry smoothy drink late last night. I was sitting up in bed and just as i turned to go to sleep i almost threw up. It almost chocked me and had a very acid taste. I also smoke so im sure that does not help but even today i feel yucky in the stomach. Is that gerd or acid reflux and if so is there anything to take for it. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Yes it is probably GERD or acid peptic problem.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Firstly, thanks for trusting us to ask your query.

The feeling you are having is most likely due to acid peptic disorder along with acid reflux.
As the name suggests ACID REFLUX should be treated in two phases-
1)Control production of acid-For which you can take omeprazole 40 mg twice daily (over the counter) for 5 days.
2)To prevent the acid formed inside stomach to reflux back into esophagus-(This part of treatment will be used if symptoms are not controlled even after using omeprazole)-I would suggest you to add Levosulpiride. Itis a prokinetic drug and is very effective in controlling reflux of acid back into esophagus.A better way is to take it with Rabeprazole trials have shown that its very effective when combined with Rabeprazole but both of them need prescription.

So initially take omeprazole for 3 days and tell me how you feel.

Along with it some general instructions are

Avoid acidic foods - citrus, tomatoes, juices
Decrease caffeine (colas, coffee) and sodas in general.
Decrease alcohol or completely stop it.
If you smoke cigarettes, now is the time to stop. They increase acid production.
Eat smaller amounts at a time so there is less pressure in the stomach which can reflux acid into the stomach.
Avoid eating/drinking mint (it relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter which can allow more acid up).

Regards and feel free to follow up.

Brief Answer:
Don't worry you would be fine in a day or two.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again my dear patient,
No it won't choke you.) to death.
Regular reflux irritates the soft tissues causing inflammation which gives you a feeling of being choked.
If you don't want to take medicine take one cup chilled iced milk three times a day.Its alkaline in nature and would neutralize acid in stomach.
Don't worry you would be fine in few days.
Hope i was helpful.
