Is Pregnancy Possible While On Nexplanon IUD?

default
Posted on Wed, 3 Aug 2016
Question: I have been on nexplanon for 6 months and it was inserted while on my period. I haven't had a period for the last 5 months. (Guess I'm the lucky one with that side effect). My boyfriend and I always use the withdrawal method with no mishaps, however for the last week I've been having white discharge and my nipples have been sensitive. (Sorry for the tmi). I know both of those are symptoms of pregnancy and Ive been reading online which has made me worry that I may be pregnant or something is wrong or our these just symptoms from the birth control.

Brief Answer:
Your symptoms are likely due to hormonal side effects

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

Statistically, the Nexplanon is close to 100 percent effective in preventing pregnancy. So the majority of women use it as their primary form of birth control, without using withdrawal or another backup method. The fact that you do not menstruate shows that your medication is working properly and inhibiting your ovulation.

Pregnancy symptoms can vary widely between women, but many of the symptoms we commonly associate with pregnancy like bloating, breast tenderness, nausea, mood changes and spotting can all be side effects of birth control methods.

I suggest, if you want to ease your peace of mind, you may purchase an over-the-counter urine pregnancy test and if it is negative, you can be reassured that the symptoms you are experiencing are just from the Nexplanon.

I hope I was able to adequately answer you question today and that my advice was helpful. If you need any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best wishes,

Dr. Brown
