Is Pregnancy Possible Through Unprotected Intercourse?

default
Posted on Tue, 5 Apr 2016
Question: A condom slipped off after I came on January 15, which was probably her day of ovulation, normally expecting her period to begin January 29. We were in Philippines so could only take Nordette. First 4 pills taken about four hours after sex, the next 4 pills delayed a bit, taken at 13 or 14 hours after the first pills instead of 12 hours after.
On January 25 she had spotting, which could be right timing for implantation bleeding, but she says it was red, not pink or brown. Now today on February 6 she's having spotting again. She took a urine test two days ago, on February 4, in the morning, and it was negative. I'm trying to get her to take a blood test, which she says she'll do two days from now, but I'd like to know what you think the chances are that she's pregnant. What argues for pregnancy is the timing of the accident. She's young and I was tested and am fertile. And she hasn't had her period yet and that spotting on January 25 could have been implantation. What argues against pregnancy is having taken the Nordette as emergency contraceptive, having the negative urine test, having no other systems, and the spotting on January 25 not being noticeably pink or brown. And I guess the fact that she's spotting again today. I'm trying to gauge our chances because I'm booking tickets to fly to Cambodia next week to a XXXXXXX Stopes clinic for medical method abortion.

Brief Answer:
Meagre chances of pregnancy

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir, thanks for trusting health care magic.
I understand your health concerns and anxiety about it.
In my opinion there is no pregnancy as
- she had emergency contraception well within time
- Her pregnancy test is negative
- she has had spotting and pregnancy test came negative after spotting as had it been implantation bleeding then pregnancy test is always positive
But seeing the anxiousness at your end still get the blood test which will be a conclusive evidence of non pregnant status.

Thank you for your response.
I've read online that urine tests are often falsely negative, even up to 7 or 8 weeks, but you're saying that if the pregnancy urine test is taken after implantation it will always be positive? Or is there still some percentage chance it will be falsely negative?
And regarding the spotting she has today on February 6, is it possible that taking Nordette as emergency contraception will mean that this month she'll have only spotting and not a period even if she's not pregnant?

Brief Answer:
Irregular menses can persist for 2-3 months

Detailed Answer:
Nordette has a high dose of progesterone especially in the quantity consumed by her, so this erratic menstrual pattern can persist for a couple of months and will be fine soon (even if she is not pregnant which is most likely her case).
As far as accuracy of pregnancy test is concerned it is valid and true in 95-97% of cases and accuracy increases to near 100% at 6-7 weeks of pregnancy so in my opinion it is very reliable in your case but blood test for pregnancy is 100% conclusive after 5 weeks of pregnancy so wil relieve your anxiety fully.
All the best
