Is Pregnancy Possible Despite Taking Contraceptive Pills?

default
Posted on Sat, 31 Jan 2015
Question: Hi,

I have been taking the pill for about 5 years, every night before going to bed (11pm-0.30 am).
I took the first pill of a new blister on Monday and on Tuesday I had sex with my boyfriend. The same night I forgot to the take the pill and I took it around lunch time (1 pm) on Wednesday, so about 13-14hours late.
Before going to bed I took the third pill (it was 0:30) but about 3 hours later I had vomit but I didn't take any other pill.
From Thursday everything was normal.

We are worried...is there the chance to get pregnant because a forgetfulnes of 13-14 hours? Is the vomit I've had on Wednesday a problem?

Brief Answer:
no risk of pregnancy

Detailed Answer:
Hello mam, I understand your health concerns.
There is nothing to worry about as there are no chances of pregnancy in those days because of lack of ovulation.
Moreover you didn't miss your pills and took it next day right away.
No need to be afraid of pregnancy and keep taking the pills as before.

no risk at all? Really?

Beacuse on the explanatory leaf it's written that:

-if you take the pill more than 12 hours later, the protection can be reduced.

-if the pill forgotten is in the 1week it has to be taken as soon as possibile. Then keep taking the pills like usual and use additional protections. If you missed the pills during the first week and had unprotected sex before the forgetfulness, can be the chance of a pregnancy. More pills you missed and closer is the forgetfulness to the break, higher is the risk.

-in case of vomit whithin 3-4 hours, it's necessary to take another pill.

So my worries came from the fact that in Italy (I'm from Italy) it's written that you should take the pill within 12 hours from your usual time and that you need about 3-4 hours to absorb the pill. I was afraid that it was like to have missed 2 pills in a row.

Brief Answer:
no worry in first week of cycle

Detailed Answer:
Yes the attached leaf has stated the right things but the fact is that you missed your pill in first week of cycle in that case the effect of missed pill is nullified by the fact that there is no ovulation during that period so protection effect is intact.
If pill is missed in third week then there is maximum risk of pregnancy (for future information).
Vomiting after 3 hours has minimal effect you took the missed pill already in afternoon and then the night dose so before vomiting most of the night time dose and whole of the missed dose had been absorbed already.
So nothing to worry and enjoy your personal life free of anxiety.
Take care.

But I am close to the break too. And during the break I don't have to take the pill, so isn't there the chance to get the ovulation start again, missing a pill in the first days of the new blister?

if not, why is written that could Be the chance of a pregnancy if you miss a pill in the first week and if you've had unprotected sex during the previous 5 days?

I know to be "a bit" too anxious, but I was really worried before your answer.

Thanks

Brief Answer:
no chance still

Detailed Answer:
I know the anxiety related to unwanted pregnancy.
The ovulation in last week of old blister has a life of only 24 hours which is protected by the fact that oral pills inhibit ovulation to occur and also interferes with endometrial receptivity.
And during the new blister there is no ovulation so again nil chances of pregnancy.
