Is Pregnancy Possible Despite Taking Plan B Post Intercourse?

default
Posted on Mon, 9 Nov 2015
Question:
Hello,

I'd like to know if there is a chance of pregnancy in this situation. On day 7 of the woman's cycle we had sex twice using withdrawal. On day 9 she took Plan B. On day 16-18 she had period type bleeding followed by brownish spotting. On day 24 she took a First Response pregnancy test which was negative, on day 27 she went to the OB/GYN and took a urine test which was put through a machine and was negative as well. On day 31 she took another First Response test which was again negative.

She experienced period-type symptoms around days 25-35. Since day 35 or she has had cramps and hunger. She took another First Response test on day 36 which was negative. Her cycles typically run around 28 days, although her last cycle was around 21 days.

Thank you.

Brief Answer:
No chance of pregnancy

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear, I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Sexual intercourse on day 7 is generally considered as safe, as chances of pregnancy are not there by unprotected sex on day7 of the cycle.
Moreover, no semen was deposited in the vagina, which further decreases any chance of pregnancy.
Repeated negative pregnancy tests are confirmatory of the fact that she is not pregnant.
Slight bleeding on day 16-18 can be due to ovulation, which is known as Mittelsmersz bleeding.
Delay in the periods can be due to stress or hormonal disturbances like hypothyroidism or polycystic ovarian disease.
If there is still any doubt, she can get a blood test to detect any pregnancy, the blood test is known as blood beta hCG levels.

Thank you. My concern is that she has had period-type symptoms (which may or may not be pregnancy symptoms) for 10 days and no period. Is this a probable side-effect of Plan B? The bleeding on days 16-18 she said was heavier, more like a period.

Brief Answer:
Side effect of plan B

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
The bleeding in day 16-18 can be due to plan B tablet as it causes withdrawal bleeding within day 5-7 of its intake.
Plan B or the emergency contraceptive pill has the side effect of delaying the next expected periods by 2-3 weeks.
So, if her pregnancy test is negative, there is nothing to worry at all.
Periods will come in 1-2 weeks.

With today being day 37 of her cycle, and no period, I am anxious. I just can't seem to convince myself that it's a Plan B side-effect. I hope her period comes soon. I am extremely stressed.

Brief Answer:
Don't be stressed.

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
Don't be stressed.
It is most likely the side effect of plan B.
The periods will come surely in next 1-2 weeks.
You both need to be a bit patient.
Since all pregnancy tests are negative, pregnancy is definitely ruled out.

Thank you. Even with the symptoms she's having and being late, you still believe she is not pregnant?

Brief Answer:
Not pregnant for sure

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
Yes, she is not pregnant for sure.
Delay in the periods is most likely due to the hormonal effect of the plan B.
If you both are so stressed out, then she can get a blood beta hCG levels done to definitely rule out pregnancy.
