Brief Answer:
It's withdrawal of the drug from her system.. does not indicate pregnancy.

Detailed Answer:
HI XXXX,
Thank you for your query under healthcare magic platform.
I have read your query& understand your concern.
* I pill is an emergency contraceptive consisting of hormone ( levonorgestrel- a progesteron ) in high dose. It prevents conception by postponing ovulation which is essential for conception or by preventing implantation of ovum in uterine cavity.( depending on the stage of menstrual cycle of the person.)
A single high dose of the hormone causes sudden rise of hormone in body.. which also gets suddenly depleted ( dropped ) over a period of week.. this causes a withdrawal bleeding .
The black & red discharge your friend had on 7th day of taking the pill.. is a sign of withdrawal of hormone .It will last for few days .
I pill when taken in 72 hours of unprotected sex is sure to avoid pregnancy . * So the bleeding your friend does not indicate pregnancy, it's just withdrawal of hormone from her body. So let her be relaxed. Only she has to be aware that-
- Her routine menstruation would be postponed by a week
- In case she needs contraception again in this month.. she should go for a barrier method... for repeated use of emergency contraception is not recommended.
* I hope the answer is both informative & useful to you. Any follow up query is welcome.
Thanks.

Hello,
Actually she has taken idoz 72. And now her bleeding was very high( reddish discharge). Still how many days the bleeding will continue? Is there any chance of pregnancy? What she has to do meanwhile?when she can expect her period? Since yesterday was her period date but this bleeding is due to side effect of pill.so when can be her date again?

Brief Answer:
NO risk of pregnancy. next period normal / a bit disturbed.

Detailed Answer:
HI,
Thanks for the additional information & follow up query.

1. Now, it's clear she had the sexual activity 7-8 days before her expected date of periods. That being a safe period ( having no chance of ovulation) she had no risk of pregnancy that day. so be relaxed.
Still as she has taken emergency contraception it has resulted in withdrawal bleeding which incidentally coincided with her expected date of menses. So we can assume that the withdrawal bleeding & menstrual bleeding will be combined this time. As a result she might have excessive bleeding/ prolonged bleeding. Accordingly it wouldn't be easy to predict how long it will last.

2. This type of hormonal interference may result in some type of menstrual irregularity in following period.

* In case she is intending to indulge in sex regularly, she has to adapt regular cyclical oral contraceptive that suits her ( with a gynecologist's advise.)
* For occasional relations it's better to use barrier method ( condom ) & use of emergency contraceptive only for emergency purpose.
I hope you have received expected answer to satisfy you. Any follow up query is welcome.
Thanks.

Hello XXXXXXX
Thanks for ur info. Now her bleeding was normal bt bleeding colour was light red(pink). Will she get her menses again?Does that indication of pregnancy? As u mentioned , chances of getting pregnant is slim , yet if in case it's positive, wat can b the solution other than abortion? As she is just 22 , the whole life gets spoiled. So plz suggest something. How to confirm that she is not pregnant?

Brief Answer:
No chance of pregnancy this time/ possible irregularity in next period.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for the follow up query.
- As I have explained before.. the high dose of hormone while your friends body was preparing to start her routine menses .. has caused a hormonal disturbance & so the change in her bleeding pattern this time.
Depending on the degree of hormonal disturbance she may get a repeat bout of bleeding this month within a weeks time OR it may be expressed in form of menstrual irregularity in her coming period.(she must take care for contraception in such condition )
- Whatever the thing is.. please rest assured.. she does not have chance of conception with sex under consideration( provided she has habit of normal regular menstrual cycle )
In case of doubt, pregnancy can be excluded by-
Blood HCG testing ( immediately ) / Urine pregnancy test after 8 days of menstrual date/ USG abdomen after 5 weeks
- Though not possible this time, early pregnancy can be aborted by medicines with an expert guidance
Hope, that satisfies you. any follow up query is welcome.
Thanks.
