Is Polydipsia A Symptom Of Diabetes?

default
Posted on Thu, 29 Dec 2016
Question: I drank 7 16 oz bottles of water in an hour and half on the way to work, plus one 16 oz glass of water since waking up this morning at 5:30 A.M. Yesterday it was about 80 oz of water. Is this too much and besides Type 2 Diabetes what might it be. I also have a upper respiratory infection which is being treated. I have called my doctor's office and am waiting for a reply on scheduling an appointment.

Brief Answer:
About polydipsia:

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I read carefully your concern.
Polydipsia is a symptom suggestive for some pathologies.
In febrile conditions the body is dehydrated and excessive thirsty is a result of dehydration. So if you have been for days with body temperature over 38 grade celcius, the body is dehydrated and needs water.
Diabetes should be excluded too, but usually polydipsia is not so rapid.
There are other rare pathologies of central nervous system that cause polydipsia and the blood tests needed in these cases are:
-Glucose level and HbA1c
-Electrolite (Na,potassium,Calcium)
-BUN and creatinine

You should monitor the blood pressure and the urine volume too.

Hope the information will help.

Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta
