Is Polycystic Kidney Disease Possible At The Age Of 34?

default
Posted on Thu, 17 Nov 2016
Question: Hi,
Almost one year back i have posted questions on pkd. And I got replies saying if at all pkd has to occur it will show impression by the age of 30. But when i recently consulted a doctor he said pkd occurs between 30-40 years in 90% cases and only 10% will have it before 30 years. But when I questioned in this forum last time saying my age is 33 doctors said I am unlikely to get the disease. Now I am entering into 34. and last week usg scan and blood urine reports all are normal. So I really want to know what are the chances for me to get the disease in future? Less or more? I jus really want to know this. And how it is in patients generally. At the age before 34 or after 34. Becz my reports every time shows normal but I have ( not constantly) on ribs just below left rib when I press on it is more. And also some lower back pain.

Hello.

I can certainly understand your concern.

Before guiding you further, I request you to kindly specify your gender.

Additionally, I would like you to know if you are currently experiencing higher blood pressure and any associated urinary tract infection.?

Is there any family history of PCKD in your case?

Thank you

Hi Sir,
My bp is normal. Blood and urine reports are normal. Ysg scan report is normal. No abnormalities in the reports except the pain under ribs mostly on left side and some times low back pain. Pains is more when I lift weights for more time.
Yes my father suffered with pkd and died at the age of 50.
So now I want to know what are the chances of getting pkd after 34 as I am 34 now. And remaining things as I asked in my previous questions. Please answer.

Brief Answer:
Risk is 50%

Detailed Answer:
Hello Sir

I can certainly understand your concern.

Since Ultrasound abdomen is normal, you need not worry.

The pain in your case is not related to kidney .It's possibly muscular.

The chances of acquiring it after 34 is around 50% in your case.

This risk will probably exist for lifetime.

It's important to screen yourself periodically through Ultrasound abdomen and Urine routine every 6 months to 1 year.

There is probably no cure or specific therapy to PCKD.

Yes the usual age of presentation is 30 to 40 years in 90 % cases. But the risk in your case after 50 dies not decrese even though it's low, as the disease is hereditary.

Post your further questions if any.
Thank you.

Hi,
I agree that risk is 50℅ since it is a hereditary disease.
But what is the intensity of the disease if anyone get it after the age of 35. Assuming a general case where it occurs for both the kidneys. And what will be the intensity after the age of 40

Hello Sir.

I can certainly understand your concern.

The intensity or severity remains more or less the same when it first occurs after 35 yrs when compared with the standard regular age of onset.
