Is Patent Ductus Artriosus In A 3 Year Old Treatable?

default
Posted on Tue, 17 Mar 2015
Question: Not sure why my question would not have gone through???

My wife and I are planning to adopt a little girl from China. She is 3 years old (born est. March 27, 2011) and is special needs. She has a congenital heart defect and has been diagnosed with PDA. My family doctor says that its treatable, which is good. Our other concern is that she is very small for her age. She is 81 cm tall and weighs 10kg. I believe malnutrition is an issue among children in orphanages in China. Her pictures seem to be OK, i.e. she looks proportional with no deformities. Her medical report seems to show that she has no mental issues.

My concern is her height and weight? I believe once she is here in North XXXXXXX she will have better nutrition and diet. Any comments? I can send her medical report for your review if this will help.

Thanks, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
PDA is treatable.

Detailed Answer:
Hi Dear
Welcome to the HCM,
PDA (Patent Ductus Artriosus) is a congenital heart defect leading to abnormal blood flow between two of the major arteries connected to the heart.
Depending upon the severity of PDA It is treatable condition either with medicines, catherization procedure or some times surgically.
Sometimes, PDA may close on its own.
Most children who have PDAs live healthy, normal lives after treatment.
Stunted growth could be because of many factors like congenital heart disease. poor nutrition and also genetic/racial.
At the age of three years the 10 kg weight and 81 cm height is little towards lower side.
Hope after the treatment and with proper nutrition and healthy environment child should grow to its normal.
Hope the query is answered.
Please feel free for further clarification
thanks
