Question: I am a non-smoker but live with a smoker. Are my cilia affected by this and will my ENT think I've been smoking?

Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

You are concerned about the effects of second hand smoke on your lungs. There is data that second hand smoke can affect a person's health. There can be some damage to the cilia of the trachea but not to an extent that an ENT could see it on examination. Second hand smoke will increase your risk for asthma or reactive airway disease. I do not believe your ENT will say anything about you possibly smoking.
