Question: Is mild, moderate artherosclerosis (claudication) in legs reversible through diet and exercise?

Brief Answer:
Atherosclerosis can not be reversed.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Atherosclerosis can not be reversed. This is a huge problem of modern society. Please note that this process starts when we become adults. Constantly in blood vessels walls cholesterol is accumulated. This causes kind of inflammation process and results with hard, build of calcium plaques creation. When you palpate such blood vessel during a surgery, it is hard like a stone.
This can not be dissolved with any known medicine or diet. The only thing you can do is to delay this process.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

well, what about my health profile? is it good? I have heard in XXXXXXX (Mayo clinic) that it can be reversed...your answer is incomplete....my arterial blockage in legs is mild, moderate...Tell me more about what I am doing to delay it please....am I on the right track? My blockage is only about 1 inch long in left leg near the knee...what about angioplasty?

Brief Answer:
Angioplasty can make blood vessels wider.

Detailed Answer:
You have asked about reversing the process, not about fixing it with a surgery. Angioplasty can make blood vessels wider. This can restore proper blood flow, but this wont make atherosclerosis disappear. So this is rather smashing plaques with a balloon (this is what they call angioplasty). It is also possible to have a bypass surgery.

All you are doing right now for your health is good and will delay the process. Especially quit smoking, avoiding fatty foods and regular exercises are good ideas and will improve your general health including blood flow.
But still, it wont make blood vessels wider.

If its about your atherosclerosis, not the length is important, but how narrow is the blood vessels (in %). If narrowing is significant, you should get symptoms like calf pain when walking and cold feet.
As artheroslerosis affects all arteries, you should also consider cervical arteries ultrasound and cardiologist consult for coronarography.
You should also start Aspirin 75 mg once a day for the rest of your life.

Hope you will find it helpful. Feel free to ask.
Regards.

I do take aspirin 81 mg daily, I do have calf pain, but it goes away after I am warmed up when I walk...I did have a cervical artery ultra-sound...nothing...I do not have cold feet, or legs. Narrowing is mild to moderate at popliteal artery...

I did have heart Doppler. A-Ok.
Is there risk when doing angio-plasty? What complications could arise? Is it safe?

Brief Answer:
This is very safe procedure.

Detailed Answer:
Angioplasty is a safe procedure. Through artery in groin area thin catheter is inserted. You will get local anesthesia before inserting it. Catheter is placed in narrow area (doctor will give a contrast through catheter and make an x-ray to make sure he is in right place). When he reaches right, narrow place, a balloon is pumped so the narrow area is smashed. This make it wider. You wont even notice this moment as it is painless.
The most common complication of this procedure is a bruise in groin. Other complications are extremely rare.

As you have calf pain, this procedure seems necessary and should improve your life comfort.

Well, that is good news....

Thank you doctor, and I would imagine that my new lifestyle will help me delay it so I can live to a ripe old age? My mom lived to 95 and I have her genes...As I said, my lipids are very low, very...and I am doing everything I can to delay and prevent it. Is there anything more I should be doing?

Brief Answer:
Your lifestyle can make you live longer.

Detailed Answer:
You have her genes but you also messed up with your body by smoking. Arteriosclerosis is a consequence of it. But still you have great chances to live long life.
As there are some conditions which risk is much higher due smoking you should have some more tests:
- chest CT (not x-ray) to rule lung cancer out
- colonoscopy every 10 years to rule colon cancer out
- if you have hoarseness, you should consult laryngologist to take a look at your larynx
- gastroscopy to rule esophagus cancer out
- abdominal ultrasound to rule kidney cancer out
- PSA level checked for prostate cancer (have it checked once a year)

Your current lifestyle should delay arteries problem for sure. So keep up with it. It is never too late.

My colonoscopy is fine....I checked.
PSA levels are fine, check every year.
No hoarseness at all. Lungs are ok...had a lung function test (technician said I had lungs of light smoker when I had it done), plus xrays every 2 years.
I agree that smoking did this to me.
Sedimentation rate is fine. Kidneys are fine.

So, I am not that bad.

Thank you to you doctor and say hello to Poland from Canada...! :)

Brief Answer:
You seem to be in a good condition.

Detailed Answer:
So you are in good condition. X-rays can detect only large tumors. If you want to be 100% about lung cancer, CT is the key. Rest of your tests is fine.

You are welcome. Hello to Canada from Poland :D
