Question: I am a 64 year old man who suffers from health anxiety and depression as well as hypertension and tachycardia. I take Valsartan for hypertension and metoprolol 25 mg per day for tachycardia. The last few days I have been noticing a particularly low resting heart rate for me in the 60s and sometimes in upper 50s when lying down. Also I noticed it is difficult to get heart rate elevated with activity. This is a recent change. I am concerned about this?

I would recommend as follows:

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

I passed carefully through your question and would explain that the low heart rate could be related to Metoprolol, although the dose that you are taking is low.

For this reason, especially if you are experiencing chronic fatigue, a low physical performance, shortness of breath or lightheadedness, it may be necessary to stop taking Metoprolol.

Anyway, before making this change to your therapy, I would recommend consulting with your doctor and performing some tests:

- a resting ECG and a cardiac ultrasound
- complete blood count
- blood electrolytes
- kidney and liver function tests.

You should discuss with your doctor on the above tests.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!
