Is Lighter Periods And Negative Pregnancy Test Results A Side Effect Of Spironolactone?

default
Posted on Mon, 22 Dec 2014
Question: I am taking 25MG spironolactone for almost a year. I had unprotected sex on Nov 1 (no ejaculation) and took Plan B within 12 hours, and another Plan B 30 hours later (I know this is not how the pill is designed to be used). When my period was due on the 19th of Nov, I had all the usual symptoms and when I started my flow on the 20th of Nov it was lighter and brown with only drops of bright red flow. I've taken 5 pregnancy tests, from 4 different brands, with morning urine all were negative. But I've been reading that diuretics can cause false negative urine pregnancy test results. My OBGYN says it's very unlikely I'm pregnant, but I wanted a second opinion.

Brief Answer:
You may not get pregnant.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for writing to us about it.

I can understand your concern, though.

Your physician is very true that the chances of pregnancy are very less in your case as you had two I-pill within time after unprotected sex and your pregnancy test is negative.

So, do not worry about it.

Wait and watch for your menses to come.

Hope it is useful, feel free to ask more.

Good luck.

Do you think that the spironolactone could cause a false negative result? Also, I don't think I made myself clear. I believe the brown flow was my period for the month as it came at my normal period time, and it was more than a few drops.

Hi Dr. XXXXXXX

I am now having a bright red light flow in my panty liner. It is also very apparent when I wipe after using the restroom and will drip faint red drops after using the restroom. I have been experiencing this since yesterday afternoon, but still no heavy flow.

However, this is lighter than my normal menstrual flow. I am also experiencing some lower abdominal discomfort like I do during my normal menstruation.

Could this be the start of my normal menstruation?

Sorry for delay I my response.

Maybe it is a start of your menstruation or may be due to side effect of I-pill.

Wait and watch for few days.
