Is It Safe To Try Conceiving While On Treatment For Depression And PCOD?

default
Posted on Wed, 4 Mar 2015
Question: I got married 5 years back. My wife has been suffering from psychiatric illness for over 4 years and she has been under medication for past 2 years. The psychiatrist has diagnosed that she suffers from two ailments: Borderline intellectual functioning and Psychosis. She is currently under Setraline and Zipsydon. While her delusions are under control, she is very lethargic and feels sleepy most of the time. If she happens to skip her medicine one night, she is unable to sleep throughout the night.

I understand that the medicines she takes are only to control the symptoms, they do not help to cure the illness. I would like to know, is there any treatment for her illness in Ayurveda? Will it be effective in curing her illness? Concieving was difficult after marriage as she suffers from PCOD. Right now, she is taking ayurvedic medicine for PCOD. Can she try to conceive when she is under medicines?

Thanks for your advise.

Brief Answer:
Management and Regime.

Detailed Answer:
Dear
Thanks for contacting Ayurveda with your health concern.

1. While sertraline is used in management of Depression,panic/anxiety disorder, zipsydon is an anti psychotic used to treat bi polar disorder.

2. While side effects of both are lack of energy, restlessness, dizziness [which she is experiencing] but with zipsydon it is stated that:

i. if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant
ii. if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement you should talk with your doctor regarding the same since some medical conditions may interact with ziprasidone capsules as stated in your history [can she conceive]

3. Dietary Regime and Lifestyle management is initiated according to “manovaha srotas vyadhi”

4.
. Avoid: alcohol, pepper, garam masala, mustard oil, pickles, rye, spicy food, anger, grief, fear, late night waking, garlic, ginger, onion.
. Take: mint, coriander, tomato, and cumin, plenty of water, vitamins and mineral supplements, XXXXXXX banana, grapes, dates

5.Lemon juice mixed with sugar in a glass of water helps release stress removing hormones from the body and bring mind at peace/rest. And eat 2 spoons coriander [Dhaniya] seeds with 2 spoons of sugar candy [mishri]

6. almond, banana, broccoli, cantaloupe, melon, carrot, cashew nut, corn, cauliflower, grapes, guava, lemon, XXXXXXX orange, pineapple, soybean, spinach have anti oxidant and detoxifying properties so take them in plenty.

7. Prescription drugs and procedures available for your problems are: sarpagandha, khus, jatamansi, bramhi, kevada, vacha, tagar, amla, vata kulantak ras, mahakalyanak ghrita, manasmitra vatkam, vati,Ashwagandharishta, sarasvatarishta, stresscom, nasya karma.

8. practice relaxation techniques like yoga, meditation but also Pranayam [anulom vilom] which will strengthen the relaxation response of body.

9. do let me know about other features associated with PCOS like: weight gain, unwanted facial hairs, impaired blood sugar & thyroid levels, irregular menses?

10. since PCOD is due to low metabolism (digestive fire) thus medicine will work/ function by increasing the Metabolism by acting as:
. XXXXXXX [appetizers],
. pacahana [digestion],
. ushna [hot],
. tekshna [sharp],
. sukshma [subtle],
. lekhana drugs [anti obese and anti kapha/fat] and thus reducing the symptoms

Do let me know about your concerns.

Thanks for your helpful reply Doctor.
You have mentioned a treatment regime called 'manovaha srotas vyadhi'. You have also provided names of certain medicines such as manasmitra vatkam and sarasvatarishta.
Are these drugs used to treat the ailment or will they only control the symptoms?
How can we get into ayurvedic treatment since she is already into allopathic treatment? Should she reduce dosage of allopathic drug step by step?
Is it possible to get cured completely of Psychosis? How long should she be under medication?

Thanks for further clarifying.

Brief Answer:
Psychosomatic Management

Detailed Answer:
Dear
Thanks for reverting back.

1. by 'manovaha srotas vyadhi" it is same as "psychiatry' in allopathy but as the Ayurvedic texts say: relation between mind and body is like between ghee and iron vessel. When one is heated the other invariably gets heated, thus whatever be the precipitating causes and manifestations, almost every disease involves both the mind and body.

PS. as such the present description of drugs will slowly but surely will control the symptoms and later on the basic pathology.

2. you can initially start with Panchkarma procedures along with Allopathic treatment so that one can gradually reduce and taper the dose of modern medicine and incorporate Ayurveda/herbal medicines.

3. Psychosis can be effectively treated and controlled for which combination of medicine and CBT [cognitive behavioral therapy] to identify and counteract negative thoughts should be started side by side.

PS. Since psychotic disorder are mental disorder thus treatment of mind is of long duration, since personality is the chief component affected

Thanks for the reply Doctor.
Final question is, are there any side-effects associated with the ayurvedic treatment for psychosis...behaviour-wise and health-wise.

Brief Answer:
Ayurveda and Psychosis

Detailed Answer:
Dear
Thanks for reverting back.

1. In Ayurveda all mental disorders are usually due to decrease in the "satva" (clarity) of the mind and thus the treatment (diet/ lifestyle) and panchkarma (detoxifying) procedures are directed towards clearing the blocked channels thus removing the toxins and increasing the satva XXXXXXX of the person thereby improving general outlook.

2. During initial period one may see deterioration in the overall appearance of the person which is due to the clearing of toxins and effect of the therapy.

3. Since psychotic disorders are "abnormal normal minds" than neurotic which are "abnormal mind" thus although prognosis is much better but one has to be progressive in his approach.
