Is it safe to travel in second trimester?

Posted on Tue, 17 Mar 2015
Question: Hi,
My wife is 31 years of age. She is pregnant & expected due date is 24th July 2015. Her scanning & other check ups done after 1st trimester show that everything is fine. Last year we had to terminate my wife's 1st pregnancy after 3 months due to Fetal Hydrops. This time we have done Double marker test & things look good so far.
My question is - She has to attend a function in hometown which is of around 450km. is it safe for her to travel for 9 - 10 hours in car or train? Even the train journey will not be 100%, last 75km will be travel by road. Road is in good condition.

Brief Answer:
Yes, the journey is safe.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
Travelling in the second trimester is safer than other times.
If the recent scan is normal, and all blood investigations so far are normal, then do not worry.
Travelling is quite safe.
The best journey is by flight, this is because the journey duration is cut short.
Take an aisle seat, and walk about a bit.
Also, the hygiene is good on a flight.
If train is inevitable, that journey too can be undertaken.
Choose a first class / coupe for travelling.
Carry home cooked, hot food and bottled water.
Avoid crowds, lifting heavy weights and travelling alone.
Take along a companion for travelling.
Take lots of rest while travelling.
The road journey should be smooth, with seat belts on , and with lots of hydration and comfort.
If these conditions are met, yes, the journey is safe.
All the best

Hi Doctor,

thanks for the clarification.

Journey by flight is ruled out.
Options available are:
1) By train (around 400 km) + by bus or taxi for 100 km
2) By car (around 500km), takes around 10 hours.

So, I believe journey by car is also safe if road is good & driven with breaks in between?

Can she travel to the same place twice (once during March 2nd week) & once during May 2nd week? Is it safe?
Or is it better to restrict the journey to once, say only in May 2nd week (main function is taking place then)?

Many thanks & regards.

Brief Answer:
Option 1 is better.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again.
See, by car, she would have to keep sitting.
It is much better to travel by train, as she can lie down and take rest.
So Option 1 is much better.
It is much better to travel only once, unnecessary and frequent travelling during pregnancy is not advisable.
Take care.
