Posted on Mon, 9 Feb 2015
Question: Hi,
I have started going to gym since 2 days. I spend 2 hrs. These two hours includes 10 mins warm up, 15 different types of exercises(weight training) and 10 different types of stretching exercises. My goal is to shed weight and develop a lean and toned muscular body. My Gym instructor informed that the diet plan is very important as I am spending quite a lot of time in gym. He suggested to take 1 scoop of whey protein powder before workout and 1 scoop after the workout. Ideally, he would have suggested chicken and eggs but I am vegetarian, those non veg options are ruled out. The protein intake is very crucial for me at this time and I have few questions about protein powder

1) What do you mean by "whey protein" and how is it prepared ?
2) The product that I bought is present at the link http://www.healthkart.com/sv/on-%28optimum-nutrition%29-gold-standard-100-whey-protein/SP-9558?gclid=CIyGoZzho8MCFUQHvAodU7wA7Q&navKey=VRNT-14666
My questions is, is it safe to consume these kind of protein supplements?

Brief Answer:
whey is water portion of milk

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

Yes, person who does strenuous or heavy exercises then need to take protein contains food.

Whey protein is made up by water part of milk (whey) which separated from curd when we do make cheese.

It may not decrease your weight but it will helpful for body composition when you do exercises.

If you do not want take it you can take protein rich food like meal maker, eggs, meat, yougurt, kidney beans, pulses and cheese.

Always natural food is better than supplements like whey protein powder. If you want you can take it.

I have gone through link that you have given.

It contains amino acids, vitamins, calcium, essential fatty acid like lecithin (it is present in egg yolk and soya beans) and iron. So it seems like safe to consume.

Do not take it in large quantities, it may cause bowel upset like loose stools, nausea and bloating.

If you have any queries I will be happy to help you.

Thank you.
