Is It Safe To Go For Another Chalazion Surgery Within 2 Weeks On The Same Eyelid?

Posted on Fri, 18 Sep 2015
Question: I had Chalazion surgery on July 21st, I refused a Kenelog injection while surgery was performed (big mistake) was told there was a lot of inflammation and I should. Anyway, there were a few that had to be removed. I waited 7 weeks before I finally agreed to do the surgery. Again, after surgery I was not instructed to use antibiotic either. So 48 hrs after surgery, new one cropped up. So now it's going on almost 3 weeks post surgery and I'm riddled again with new ones!!' My question is: how long do I have to wait to have another removal?

Brief Answer:
Another chalazion surgery can be done by 1-2 weeks.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to Health care Magic

I am Dr. Dadapeer an ophthalmologist and I will be answering your question.

I reviewed your history.

After chalazion surgery you can go for another chalazion removal surgery by 1-2 weeks if it is in same eyelid near the earlier one. The time duration depends on the inflammation following surgery earlier the inflammation decreases earlier you can go for surgery. Usually it takes 1-2 weeks for the inflammation to subside hence this much time is required.

If the chalazion is away from the earlier one then surgery can be done within same week.

Hence please mention whether the second chalazion is near the earlier one and whether you are still having symptoms of inflammation following surgery like pain, redness, swelling of the eyelid so that I can advice you accordingly.

Hope this answers your question.

Thank you

Yes, the new ones are pretty close to the old ones. After I take a nap or sleeping all night o have large puss Baggs under my eyes. My appt with my dr isn't until Thusday as he's on vacation . Should I be seen sooner? Takes a while with washing my eye or using warm compresses to get puss bags down. Is that to be expected with Chalazions as well?

Hello, after 10 weeks, one surgery almost 1 month ago, appears my Chalazion is finally gone. I did get another Chalazion 48 hrs after surgery. So I started blasting it with hot compresses. Had a f/u with my optomologost yesterday. Said all I had was a ton of inflammation. Apparently , from continuing to blast my eye with heat for a week and half and there was no Chalazion! So now I have fluid under my eye . I was then given another Kenelog injection under my eye A d given Tobradex eye ointment twice a day for 14 days until I have a f/u appt. apparently I've made a mess of my eye and the main concern is getting down the Inflamation! Question is; it's been over 24 hrs from the Kenelog injection. I have a full on and off pain over that eyebrow. I assume from all the Inflamation. Can I take Otc Advil? Also how long before the swelling should start to subside? Thank you!

Thank you for the follow up question.

I reviewed your history.

The follow up examination from your doctor confirms the presence of inflammation as I had mentioned in my previous answer.

After kenalog injection it takes 3-5 days for decrease in inflammation.
Advil being an anti-inflammatory drug can be used in this condition.

Hope this answers your questions.

Hello, I have been on Tobradex ointment for 10 days now, twice a day. I've noticed small bumps under my eye. Still have bruising and Inflamation / swelling. Could the small bumps be from the ointment? I'm thinking of stoping the ointment. I have a f/u appt Thursday, but going to see if I can be seen tomorrow. It's been 10 days since the Kenelog injection and I saw improvement, but know it's like I'm at a stand still with no further improvement, now the little bumps. Your advice. Please?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Dadapeer K (1 hour later)
Brief Answer:
The small bumps are not caused by the ointment.

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thank you for the follow up question.

I reviewed your history.
The small bumps are not likely to be caused by ointment. They may indicate small swollen glands.
These will respond to tobradex ointment. Hence you need to continue the tobradex ointment.

Do follow up with your doctor and get back to me with the examination reports.

Hope this information is helpful to you.

I've been applying ice for only a couple of minutes , a couple of times a day. Yesterday, when applying ice, under eye got very purple/red looking. Today, only a coupe of minutes of ice, it turned more yellow, like a bruise that's healing , no red or purple. even the bumps under the eye looked better. I will continue with the ointment until my f/u on Thursday, or if I can move that appt before Thursday.

Thank you

You need to continue the application of the eye ointment and since the lesions are responding to cold compression you can do cold compression also.

Do consult your doctor as per the schedule.

Hello, so I f/u this morning regarding Chalazion/Inflamation issues. 2 weeks ago opthomogist thought Chalazions were gone, actually 2 opthomogist thought they were gone and I was just left with a lot of inflammation. Well, has improved over the last two weeks, had Kenelog inj 2 weeks ago and used Steriod/antibiotic twice a day for 13 days. Today, doc said for sure improvement , checked pressure in eyes due to all Steriod. Pressed under my eye... Well there they were. Two Chalazions that never were gone :-(. Apparently they were unable to see because of all the Inflamation. Said they were small. Took me off the Steriod ointment , but leaving me on the antiobiotic ointment and gave me another Kenelog injection. I do not have another f/u appt. if need be , all make another appt. doc also wasn't a me on Oracea once a day for 4 months!!! So u requested I let u know what the findings are. This is it. My hopes are this last injection will knock out the last two small ones.
Question: Can I take a Claritin reditabs since I just received Kenelog injection for Chalazion today. Also, is otc Advil safe to take as well? Not both today, but just wanted to know, Especially Claritin for my allergies,

Thank you

Thank you. I have bad allergies and forgot to ask today if I could take allergy meds. I looked up the oral antibiotic and am not comfortable at all with taking for 4 months. From what I've read, the antibiotic seems more like a preventative . Is this correct? It will not cure, just possibly keep more from coming in the future. Is this correct. Thank you!!
doctor
Answered by Dr. Dadapeer K (25 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
You can take allergic medicines.

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thank you for the follow up question.

You can take allergic medicines. Oral antibiotics are not required in this condition and only antibiotic eye ointment is sufficient.

Antibiotic is given here to prevent secondary infection.

Hope this answers your questions and the information is helpful to you.

Thank you
