Is It A Must To Buy Glasses For Cylindrical Power?

default
Posted on Sat, 10 May 2014
Question: My daughter has been diagnosed with cyclindrical power with -1.25 and -1.75. She has been advised to wear the glasses to address the same. We noticed that while doing checkup drops were poured to dilate the eyes but checkup was done within 5 minutes of pouring drops. 1. it good to have the checkup done with another doctor as well to confirm the actual power? 2. there any harm in delaying buying new glasses by couple of weeks or so? 3. Is it a must to buy glasses for cylindrical power? What are the implications in child not wearning the glasses for addressing cylindrical power issue? Regards, XXXX

Brief Answer: She requires to use spectacles. Detailed Answer: Hello Mr. XXXXXXX Welcome to Health care magic It seems from the history that your daughter is diagnosed with refractive error with cyclindrical power of -1.25 and -1.75. This is simple myopic astigmatism. This requires correction by the use of spectacles with appropriate power as advised by your doctor. Coming to your questions, Since your daughter is 6 years old and in all children below 10 years old the accommodation is very active hence the refraction test has to be carried out under cycloplegic eye drops. The cycloplegic eye drops take around 30 minutes to act and refraction has to be carried out after 30-45 minutes. Since you have mentioned that the refraction was done within 5 minutes, it is better to get checkup done with second doctor, to find out the correct refraction reading. Though without eye drops refraction readings can be obtained, but in children it is better to have it under cycloplegic eye drops. Hence it is better that she goes for second opinion with refraction under cycloplegic eye drops. There is not much harm in delaying the use of spectacles by one week, but she should wear the glasses to prevent development of ambylopia or lazy eye. Glasses are must irrespective of whether it is spherical or cylindrical power. As the eye grows fast in children the refraction reading can increase if the correction is not given and difference in the power in both eyes can lead development of ambylopia or lazy eye because of suppression of the eye with greater refractive error. Hence in children correction of the refractive error is very important and glasses should be worn by them regularly and children require eye check up at frequent intervals atleast once in a year to find out any increase or decrease in the refractive power. Thank you With regards

Dear doctor, Can you please suggest type of lens as well? Do you suggest glass or plastic lens? Should we go for high quality lens like essilor? Does it make any difference? Regards, XXXX

Brief Answer: Plastic lenses are better. Detailed Answer: Hello Mr XXXXXXX Thank you for the follow up. The lenses made of plastic are always better as they are lighter in weight and they are well accepted. The higher quality lenses like Zeiss, Essilor do make a difference. But the difference is better appreciated in case of multi focal or progressive lenses which are required for correction of presbyopia in people aged more than 40 years. In case of mono focal lenses which are required in children not much difference is seen. Hence you can go for any brand lens. Hope the information is helpful to you. Thank you With regards
