Is Irregular Menstruation A Sign Of Menopause?

default
Posted on Tue, 22 Dec 2015
Question: Hello, I am 44 years old and my menstruation cycle is slowing down, presumably due to menopause. I sometimes skip a period so I get it every second month. Since my last cycle well over a week ago I have not stopped bleeding. It is not heavy and not all day... I guess it would be called spotting. I do not take any contraception and I have not since I was 21 years old when I had Tubal ligation (tubectomy). I have had the same sexual partner for the past 20 years. I am not feeling bloated or swollen ankles etc or any other usual symptoms I get. Could you please give me some reasons as to why this may be happening?

Brief Answer:
Ultrasound scan required to identify reason

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for your query.

I have read you query and I understand your concerns.

Following is my reply:

1) It is difficult to predict the reason accurately. The possible reasons at your age could be presence of fibroid or polyp in the uterus.

2) Fibroid or polyp are mass lesions in uterus which otherwise are not harmful. They are known to cause bleeding as you described and occur in your age group.

3) Best way to identify these lesions is by getting examined and also ultrasound scan done by your doctor. Hence please see your gynecologist and request the same.

I hope I answered you query and addressed your concerns.

Let me know if you wish to ask any further questions. I will be glad to help you.

Regards,
Dr. Soumya
