Is Irregular Heartbeat And Pounding Sensation In Heart A Cause For Concern?

default
Posted on Tue, 29 Mar 2016
Question: What sorts of irregular heartbeat would cause a pounding sensation? I am no stranger to the occasional heart flutter, flip flop, or skipped beat. Today i got up then bent over and then sat back down and felt a strange feeling in my chest. I took my pulse and it was regular just very fast and strong. This lasted for aprox five or six beats, then i had a skipped beat, and then the normal rhythm resumed. It would initially assume a run if PVCs but they felt like complete beats. I suppose this could also be NSVT but have read that needs to be bey fast. I just had a full echo ultra sound last week and everytting was entirely normal. I guess my question is: what type of arryrhmia can cause that poundig feeling?

Brief Answer:
Nothing serious

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir,

During such movements normal sinus rhythm may be faster for a short period.
But sometimes arrhythmias are also possible. In your age ventricular arrhythmis are not common, and they are not caused by such movements.
Supraventricular arrhythmias can be observed in such cases, but rarely. They are not dangerous.
Most probably you had elevated sinus rhythm, which is normal. Anyway, if you notice that such episodes again, I would advise you to have 24 hour holter ECG monitoring done. It is an examination, when 24 hour ECG is registered with a small device. And your physician will see if there is really any arrhythmia.

Hope I could help you

Wishing you good health

Thank you - I don't believe this was normal sinus rhythm since it only lasted for 5 beats. I understand normal sinus rhythm such as if I walk up stairs quickly. This was a very brief burst of 5-6 very firm beats. Could normal sinus rhytm present in this way and then abruptly stop, or does normal sinus rhythm reduce gradually such as when you stop exercise? I should not I am physically fit so have no issues with poor cardio etc.

Brief Answer:
Welcome back

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir,

Probably it was a short episode of supraventricular tachycardia.
If not frequent it is benign and not serious.
If there will be no other episode, don't worry. If you notice recurrent episodes, I would advise you to have an holter monitoring done, as it it the only method we can detect the exact type of arrhythmia.

Take care
