Question: Hello,

My cleaners used bleach to clean my shower tday. The bathroom is connected to my bedroom where my 1 month old sleeps. Is the fumes in the bathroom harmful to my baby in my bedroom? My husband got home from work and said smelled strong and now I am concerned. Doors were open but not windows.

Brief Answer:
Chlorine from bleaching powder would not be harmful

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

You can stay relaxed. The bleaching powder contains chlorine which has antimicrobial action. Even if the fumes could have reached the one month old baby, I do not think that it is a cause of concern and would not be harmful for the baby. So you may relax.

However, if the smell is so strong that it is uncomfortable for you yourself, it could not be pleasant for the child and you may like to temporarily house the baby in a different room for a few hours in case it is uncomfortable for you but not because it is harmful.

I hope that answers your query. Feel free to revert back in case of further queries if any.

Brief Answer:
It is not harmful

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.

There is no difference in liquid bleach and bleaching powder so do not worry about that. These have a pungent smell that is unpleasant and the headache could either be due to the irritation from it or due to lack of sleep (more likely to be the latter). However, these fumes are not harmful and are not going to harm you or the baby. So, you need not worry about it. No signs to watch for. You may just move to another room temporarily for a few hours only just for the sake of comfort and nothing else.
