Posted on Mon, 27 Feb 2017
Question: I have anxiety taking 5mg diazepam for years. As I now have increased anxiety due to Crohn's disease do you think I should ask to increase dose of diazepam. I did severel months ago stop taking citalipam as I thought I was taking too many tablets - now mobervine zoperamide pro biotic bits b and d. Lost 4st 8lb in 1 year. Had many falls this year due to excess bile making legs weak whilst trying to get to bathroom. Recently Gastroenterologist put me on steroids - only took them 1 morning suffered terrible side effects causing 2 falls in early hours admitted to EAU and moved to ward (2) days. Due to have MRI scan very soon? Also paracetomal sometimes codeine when pain severe - try to eliminate flare up triggers

Brief Answer:
you can ask for the dose to be increased!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I've gone through your query in details and understand your concern,

Sticking to the same drug is always a better way to go. It would be better that you ask for the dose to be increased to say 10mg. This way, your symptoms would be better controlled. When you develop side effects to any drug, always talk back to the doctors so that they can actually provide alternatives that might be more friendly to you.

I wish you well. Keep me posted with your progress after you meet with the doctor.

Feel free to get back to me in case of any further queries.

Kind Regards

GP totally confused me. Not only would she not agree to increase diazepam to 10mg but she actually wants me to decrease diazepam !! As she said it is addictive (as I already know) but I am not young with responsibilities of babies - it suited me and helped keep me calm and sleep. She only wants me to take it when I feel anxious. She wants me to go back to taking citalipam. The only positive suggestion she made was to contact a mind helping org for cognative help and support.

I find side effects of citalipam not suitable for someone my age especially as I already have weak muscles and sore joints due to Crohn's. I actually felt those symptoms reduce when I stopped taking it. The dose used to be double what it is now and was halved when I develloped breathlessness . Those over 60 should not take large dose cause of that side effect. Speachless really as to such a suggestion. So I just took a citalipam this morning - not looking forward to put it mildly to the many side effects I don't need with Crohn's to cope with.

Brief Answer:
Stick to this for now and let’s review in a week!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Medicine is never rigid and many options could be tried. Because you have been offered the another plan by your primary care physician, I will suggest that we calm down and follow it with a positive mindset. Generally, citalopram offers good response within two weeks. Let’s continue for at least this time frame and see what difference it makes. If it does help, then we are good. If it doesn’t, we would need to try other options.

Getting health with behavioral and coping techniques is a great addition. I will suggest that you strongly consider doing so.

I can guarantee your health is not in a dire state. Let’s be gentle in our approaches and we would certainly use time to get the best care plan for you.

Kindly keep me updated and feel free to keep the exchanges going if need be.
