Is Galantamine Safe To Use For Alzheimer's Disease?

default
Posted on Mon, 5 May 2014
Question: my dad has alzheimers, and is on galantamin hydrobromide . We stopped giving him the medication because he was having diarhia. Is that safe to do and would that have adverse side effects? It has only been a few days, but have noticed more confusion. Is it just the disease, or is it because of not having the meds on board. Also, What foods would help with the diarhia besides bananas. Thanks, XXXXXXX

Brief answer...given below Detailed answer.... Hello, Thanks for the query. Although diarrhoea could be the side effect of galantamine hydro bromide but even then you should not have stopped the medicine of your own. After stopping the medicine the confusion and other symptom would definitely worsen. Since you have stopped the medicine, you should not start it agin without talking to the doctor because the medicine has to be restarted in the lower dose and not on the earlier dose. For food in diarrhea, you can give BRATT diet for initial 3-4 days days and this comprises of bananas, rice, applesauce, tea and toast. After 3-4 days you can add cereals, eggs, baked fish, milk, skinless chicken, cooked vegetables etc.Take plenty of water and avoid caffeine. Do consult your doctor, since you have stopped the medicine. I hope it helps, however you may revert to me for any further query. Best of luck Thanks
