Is Epididymitis A Symptom Of STD?

default
Posted on Wed, 1 Jul 2015
Question: Hi doctors. After a heavy day of drinking at a bachelor party in Las Vegas I ended up at a strip club, where I blacked out. I do not remember my clothes being off or intercourse with anyone except that the next morning my anus had a burning/rasht sensation. Two days later I had a burning sensation in my scrotum/testicles. The only thing that would relieve the burning sensation was ice. I went to an urgent care clinic and was diagnosed with epididymitis. Was given a shot of rocephin and prescribed doxycycline. I had an 8 panel test done for STDs only to find out I took it to soon after possible exposure. The lab results for bacterial infection came back negative. I went to the doctor yesterday because I still feel discomfort in my anus and base of penis. I am truly scared because I am uncircumcised, which increases my odds of catching something. He found a fissure in my texting and took a swab for herpes. Do any of my symptoms correlate to any STD I may have? Please help.

Brief Answer:
you are at risk

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
The epididymitis is not always from a sexually transmitted infection (STI), but it could be after an unknown exposure like this. The good thing is that you were treated with rocephin and doxycycline which would treat gonorrhea and chlamydia the two most common sexually transmitted infections.
To answer your main question about whether or not your symptoms sound like an STI, it is very hard to say because your symptoms are nonspecific. They could be related to herpes or just to general irritation if you had something inserted into your anus during this time period.
I do think it is important for you to be tested for syphillis, HIV, gonorrhea and chlamydia to make sure that you did not contract any of these infections.
The HIV test will need to be repeated 3 months after the initial exposure just to make sure that you are negative.

Thanks for your reply Dr. I have to also admit that my lips have had a burning sensation. I had a few canker sores last week but have disappeared since. I have not experinced any burning on the head of my penis. Just discomfort on my testicles when i think about it and the base of my penis. Should i hold off intercourse until i find out if i have something. Do you recommend taking the qPCR test for HIV. My exposure occured on May 30th. Should i just wait until the end of the month to test? Thank you for your help.

Brief Answer:
yes to qPCR HIV test

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for your follow up,
You can either wait until you get all test results to have intercourse (safest) of if you do decide to have intercourse make sure you use condoms.
I do recommend that you get the HIV test now and again 3 months after the possible exposure.
Cancer sores can be a form of herpes, but you can be tested with blood tests for HSV1 (oral, canker sores) and HSV2 (genital) forms of HSV (herpes simplex virus)
I am sorry that you had this experience and hope you are feeling back to normal soon,
Regards,
Dr. Robinson
