Is Continued Use Of Simvastatin Advisable While Having Normal Cholesterol Levels?

default
Posted on Fri, 23 Dec 2016
Question: Why should I continue to take a Staton (Simivistaton)? my age is 64, female. I weigh 125, I don't eat red meat, or fried foods, easy of the sugar, don't smoke, drink lightly. My cholesterol in July this year was 221 (50-200mg/dl), Triglycerides 50 (50-150 mg/dl), HDL Direct 138 (40-100mg/dL) and my LDL calculated 73(0-99mg/dL
There is some history of heart disease . I have been talking Simivistation since 2008. I have hearing chatter that high cholesterol (with the right numbers) is not bad, but Statons are. This is the only medication I take. XXXXX

Brief Answer:
if no heart disease, no problems with clotting, no sig family history

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

That's a good question.

If you have a strong history of heart disease or stroke in your family then the statins would give you good protection and significantly reduce your risk of either of these occurring.
This would be a male relative having an event (heart attack, stroke or diagnosed with significant heart disease) before age 55 or a female before 65.

If this is not the case and you are also not diabetic or do not have high blood pressure then you are at a low risk (unless you have heart disease yourself or history of blood clotting illness).
This means that you can discuss discontinuation with your doctor.

He or she would need to repeat your numbers in a few months however because the medication would be responsible for keeping your cholesterol within a good range and stopping would cause an increase.
It may or may not be a significant increase if your lifestyle is otherwise healthy (exercise and food habits)

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
