Posted on Fri, 27 Jun 2014
Question: I just left psychiatrist's office. Large HMO. Felt Brintellix would be well suited for me. However, HMO not permitted to prescribe because medication is too new. I'm looking for a referral to a non-HMO psychiatrist.

Brief Answer:
approach a psychiatrist or try an option

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXX,
Welcome to healthcare Magic!
Brintellix is Vortioxetine which is an antidepressant drug of SNRI class.
The drug has been recently approved by FDA for this purpose and also for treatment of General anxiety disorder.
There have been four Randomised controlled trials for this drug. There was certain evidence of benefit in one, slight benefit in another and remaining two trials gave contradicting results.
Every state has got certain norms for prescriptions, if the HMO is not writing it for you then you may approach a more XXXXXXX doctor or a psychiatrist.
Optionally you may go for more established, safe and proven effective drugs for this purpose namely Fluoxetine, Sertraline, Mirtazepine etc.
These drugs are in vogue for years and have been extensively studied and are well known for their safety and efficacy.
I hope the advise would be informative and useful for you.
Take Care!
