Is An Operation Necessary For A Colle's Fracture Of The Wrist?

default
Posted on Sat, 4 Jul 2015
Question: Hi, my right wrist is injured. X-ray report says "Comminuted fracture lower end of radius with volar displacement and impaction. Fracture styloid process of ulna". Doctor advised for an operation saying cast might heal the fracture but retain some pain. My question, is it necessary to operate? can it be rightly adjusted without operation?

Brief Answer:
Can be adjusted without operation.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The description of X-ray is suggestive of Colle's fracture of the wrist. Operation and internal fixation is not needed in all the cases. It can heal well with cast. After the removal of cast, proper physiotherapy is needed to reduce the joint stiffness and to regain the full joint movement.
Even if this is fixed after an operation the chances of stiffness of the wrist joint and pain are still there. You will need physiotherapy after the surgical correction also. Surgical treatment can be avoided in this case.
I hope this answers your query.

Hi, have attached the x-ray. You still prescribe a cast solution?

Brief Answer:
Can be treated with cast.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
I have seen the attached X-ray.
Articular surfaces are intact. This can be treated with a cast followed by a physiotherapy after the bone heals.
Hope my answer is helpful.
