Posted on Wed, 10 Aug 2016
Question: my wife just saw a cardiologist and she was informed that she has an extra heart beat. He is scheduled to see her in a couple of weeks for whatever need to be done. I was curious to know more about that condition

Brief Answer:
Nothing to worry, however routine and timely follow-up to continue..

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX, Welcome to HCM..

I've gone through your query and understand your concern for your wife..

Now first of all let me assure you that an extra heart beat or Ectopic beat is a normal physiological phenomenon and all of us have this several times a day either knowingly or unknowingly..

But it becomes troublesome when it starts happening every now and then and remain prolonged for a while instead of just a wink of a moment, causing the person more anxious and aware of his/her heartbeats known as palpitations..

It's good that your wife has already seen the cardiologist because at the age of 68 years, everyone must rule out any cardiac and/ associated pathology which may be causing this..

I believe she already had the 12 lead EKG done, if not done already then please get it done without any further delay to keep a baseline record of her cardiac rhythms..

The cardiologist will be checking her clinically as well as may order a few more investigations based on the findings(i.e. Electrolyte panel, a thyroid profile and/ holter monitoring based on the EKG findings..)

Let me know if your having any further doubts, i'll be glad to clarify..

Take Care
Kind Regards
