Question: Hi
In the last year in 7th month ,i was bitten by a stray dog on my leg, immediately i got the first shot , after that on respected dates i started getting my shots. But after 3rd and 4th shot i consumed alcohol which was whithin 24 hrs. Its 9 months till date . I didnt get any symptoms . But somtimes i started getting pain in that leg, as i have read on internet that the symptoms of rabies can took place after years too . Im very worried about the disease. Thus i want to ask that consuming alochol is dangerous or not ?

Brief Answer:
Alcohol and anti-rabies vaccination

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.

There is no restriction of alcohol intake for persons undergoing ant-rabies vaccination. Since you have taken the course of anti-rabies vaccination, you are protected against rabies. Pregnancy also is not a contra-indication of Rabies vaccination.
Same dose of the vaccine is used in pregnancy, neonates and old age.

The earliest specific neurologic symptoms of rabies include paresthesias, pain,
or pruritus near the site of the exposure, one or more of which occur in 50–80% of patients and strongly suggest rabies. The wound has usually
healed by this point, and these symptoms probably reflect infection with associated inflammatory changes in local dorsal root .
In your case though it does not appear to be as the pain is only occasional and probably you are unnecessarily worried getting focused on the pain in the limb occurring sometimes, which can occur as part of advanced pregnancy.

Thank You Sir,
So it can happen that the leg had become weak because of the bite ? Because after that incident the pain took place in that limb only and somtimes near the area where i was bitten .
Sir is it possible to get the symptoms of rabies after years too?

Brief Answer:
Rabies presentation and course of illness

Detailed Answer:
The incubation period of rabies (defined as the interval between exposure and the onset of clinical disease) is usually 20–90 days but in rare cases is as short as a few days or >1 year (maximum 7 years).
Rabies can be paralytic type (dumb Rabies)-flaccid paralysis ascending from lower limb-usually occurs in partially vaccinated person or bat-transmitted rabies.Rabies once symptomatic -is usually fatal within a week after the onset of symptoms. In a few days paralysis ascends to involve the respiratory muscles leading to respiratory paralysis and death.

Weakness in one limb as you described certainly does not suggest Rabies.

Brief Answer:
Rabies vaccination

Detailed Answer:
Partially vaccinated person means a person who has taken incomplete vaccine course.
The full course of Anti-rabies vaccination is - Inj Human diploid cell vaccine (HDCV) each dose-1 ml.IM or Purified chick embryo cell vaccine (Rabipur). each dose-1 ml. IM or Purified vero cell vaccine (PVRV) (Verorab/Abhayrab) each dose-0.5 ml. IM in the deltoid area on days 0 (1st dose), 3, 7,and 14; a fifth dose on day 28 is no longer recommended. Ideally, the first dose (day 0) should be given as soon as possible after exposure(within a day or two).
If you have taken the full course ,you are safe.Intake of alcoholic drink does not affect immunization process against Rabies.
