Is Absence Of Vaginal Bleeding Post Cytotec Intake Suggestive Of Unsuccessful Abortion?

Posted on Fri, 16 Oct 2015
Question: Took cytotec as doctor prescribed for abortion but no bleeding occurred. Two 200mg tablets swallowed and another 200mg swallowed after 5 hours. felt very small cramping for a few minutes but nothing after that. Does this mean the cytotec will be ineffective for me?

Brief Answer:
Misoprostol is for abortion

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I see a few questions from you where you responded taking cytotec for stomach pain. I hope you are properly prescribed 'Cytotec'

Generally to facilitate easy abortion doctors prescribe Mifepristone plus Misoprostol (cytotec) together. Mifepristone is main abortifacient and misoprostol increase the chances of bleeding and pushes the aborted foetus out of the womb.

If you are given Misoprostol, a mild abortificient, which also facilitates abortion; it is always better to test with post abortion(bleeding) Ultrasound scan if there are any left overs of the foetus in the womb. You had not mentioned what week foetus are you carrying, so the bleeding depends on the age of the foetus.

So to answer your question, any abortifacient including Cytotec should be confirmed with post abortion scan.

Hope this answers.

sorry I use this account to ask questions for me and my friends. so I can see you the confusion would come in to play. She had a miscarriage and the doctor she went to see said you only needed to take 4 tablets to pass the fetus. She did but experienced no bleeding.

Brief Answer:
Perhaps we should opt for interventional procedure...

Detailed Answer:
Apologies for the late reply.
Generally complete abortion is preceeded by heavy bleeding and passing large clots. In this case it is evident that those two pills were ineffective presuming that doctors tried to abort an inevitable abortion.
In this circumstance my colleague gynecologist generally do not favour repeating / attempting another trial with medications. The process should be completed by a procedure - dilatation and evacuation. However before attempting it, an ultrasonogram should be done. I suggest the patient to get back to the treating doctor and discuss about my views.
Regards
